Ron Hood has released this large folder that is supposed to be able to replace a fixed blade. It is called the Knifenator. It is certainly big, but I have a hard time believing that and outdoorsmans such as he is would suggest that it is compareable to a good fixed blade. Anyone know anything about this beast?
Thanks

Ha Ha....you guys are great! So we have an Outdoorsmans knife that is a serrated tanto, that is a heavy folder made with borderline inferrior steel. Man, the more I think about it....the more I need one. :-)

The best thing about that knife is that it's cheap for what you get. You just need to change your evaluation criteria.

And by this I mean... by the pound of course! 9+ oz's of folder for under 50 bucks. No Spyderco can touch that value ratio!!!

The knifenator is an industry leader, strictly IMO.

Weight: 9.3 oz. (There’s over ½ lb of steel in this baby!)
Other features:
Buttery smooth, one handed opening.
Liner Lock.
Sturdy pocket clip
Can be disassembled easily for cleaning.
Durable black finish.
Can take the place of a fixed blade knife in your pack.

Suggested Retail: $125.
Our Introductory Price is $49.95

Buck 110 weighs in the area of 7.3 oz. and is one of the most trusted outdoors folding knives there is, it can be had for a full twenty dollars cheaper. And who is Woodmaster?

The only thing I know about the blade is that the original manufacturer went belly up. Since I don't own the knife, I won't poo poo it.

I'm more familiar with Ron Hood. If he thought it was junk, he
1) wouldn't use it
2) wouldn't try selling it to you. I first heard about Fehrman knives from his videos. And Gossman... and. Heck, his wilderness videos are one of the reason I'm on this forum.

On his forums, he says he's carried it for two years and abused it. I don't doubt his word. His test for fixed blade knives is wacking through frozen elk bone, and then seeing if it still shaves...

I haven't purchased the knife and I don't own a knife with similar blade steel so I can't say whether it's decent or not.

As someone who has hunted for years and spends a lot of time outdoors, I have never had the desire to own a folder with a Tanto blade and serrations...
Definitely not worth a crap for working on game.

It is G-10 though . I'll pass though to give all the other members a chance to own one of these beauties

I don't understand the "hoods woods" thing. Ninja hoods?? Might be good for mosquitoes but a little hot in summer.

+1 for jungman.

I saw an ad for that knife, I probably wouldn't take it seriously. But Ron Hood is formidably competent.

"Replace a fixed blade" is one of those things people say of folders that lock up real well. So for most purposes, it can replace a fixed blade. But yes, it's an exaggeration.

I think 440B was what Randall Knives uses or used for a stainless steel.
