very strong product. micarta was the g10 before g10. whether paper, nylon, or canvas....its the resins and paper or cloth that makes it very durable and strong. much like plywood, not really but close enough an example of strength. i personally prefer micarta to g10. it feels warmer and better to me. point is dont be afraid of it, it aint weak.I've been considering that Griptilian, but I have no experience with paper micarta handles. How do they compare to G10? Maybe the term "paper" is what is making me hold off from buying.
The thing with the weight issue comes down to the stock Noryl scales--if you don't hate 'em you can have a lighter Grip. I've got 5--a 550/555 pairing in Igorded G10s, small/large Ritter's in Wilkins G10s, and a 551SBK in Igorded Micarta--and the added weight is of no consequence to me. My wife has a 550-1 and wouldn't think of trading the weight for the Noryl.Got my eye on the 551-1702 as well. I bet it's beautiful, but the weight has me on the fence. It's almost an ounce heavier than the regular 551... .
