KnifeWorks's 710 m390: New, but already has scale wear

Hope this is the right place. I purchased this a few days ago: http://www.knifeworks.com/benchmade710-1401-M390.aspx

Haven't had a chance to really use it yet, but i do like the size, fit, and so far the sharpness. I carry it clipped in my pocket, which also has my keys and a zippo.

I took the knife out to admire it (why lie lol) and saw that it was already looking pretty worn. Now, as a daily carrier which i planned on doing, this isn't a deal breaker. Though, i am worried if it's wearing this fast. Will i soon be holding just a skeletonised frame? Does anyone else use/carry one of these and have a similar issue? Thanks!

Residue from the lighter maybe? G10 is pretty tough stuff, don't worry about wearing those scales out! Very nice knife by the way.

Thanks, I totally agree. Especially on the price for it.

Guess this residue might be some random thing flaking on the keychain. Just glad it's not the knife. :D

G-10 is funny stuff. I have had mold growing on knife scales before, and it was surprisingly difficult to get rid of it. WD-40 does do wonders for it though.

Everyone should be carrying their folders in sheaths. [emoji14]

Seriously though, if you haven't tried it you should. For me anyway, it's a vastly superior way to carry, even if I didn't make it. ;)

havnt heard the WD40 trick I use those "Magic Eraser" sponges you get at any HD. Just get one end wet go at it then used the dry end to soak up this is in fact how I clean all my g10 has worked like magic every time

Magic eraser is great for getting dirt off g10. Apparently you can find it sold as melamine foam at a much cheaper price.
The wd40 is for when the g10 gets dried out. I tested some lighter fluid on a piece of g10 and it did turn white so I'm convinced that was the issue.

A simpler solution for an expensive knife would've been to put the keys and lighter in another pocket. The knife will always lose the contest. ;)

hmph! interesting folks very interesting! I just put custom linen micarta scales on my 2 mini grips and usually have a lighter in the same pocket wonder what lighter fluid would do to linen micarta?

Just tested some on both polished and rough green linen. No effect on the polished, slight stain on the rough piece that rubber away with my finger.

G-10 is a laminate and what you are seeing is the laminate turning white due to rubbing it with something harder. Same thing happens when you sand or drill it. I prefer rubbing a bit of light machine oil (3-in-1) on it with an old tooth brush. Shines it right up and looks as good as new.

Could be, but it takes more than just a light rub against something to do that. Can't imagine the scales got that beat up just from sitting in a pocket. Maybe a combination of both. Easy fix anyway.
Here's a scrap piece of g10 before and after lighter fluid:

Looks a little bit like G10 dust, don't you think?
Either way, (dust, scratched or dried out) any oil will restore a more vibrant finish to the G10 and rubbing alcohol is a great solvent for getting stuff off the G10 (including the oil).
