I know I'm in for it posting that I can knit; but it is a great long term survival skill..this is a jute fire bag I made that was made to hold an altoids tin. I have a fire kit in the tin (hence the name). Lots and lots of jute that could be burned in a true emergency too. note the paracord for button closure (chinese button knot) and belt loops. knitting is easy, I learned on the yarn website!

You're not the first. I think Doc Canada crocheted (sp?) a tin bag. I actually may do something like this. I've been looking at getting a belt pouch and nothing I've seen really fits the bill for what I want. My girlfriend knits and crochets so I'd have someone to teach me. In fact I have one of her hats in my survival gear.:D I kind of like the idea of crocheting cause it only involves one needle.

I like it ... Doc Canada has a really nice one that he's posted previously.

Just realized that my girlfriends probably knitting as I type this. She's on a flight to Baltimore. lol:D

Nothin wrong with knowing how to knit!!

I've been practicing for a bit now and should be able to knit my own sweaters soon.

Then it on to socks.

I love wool and it has gotten increasingly difficult to find good heavy bulky sweaters. Thus teaching myself to make my own is the best option.

I like it. My daughter made me a knife lanyard out of jute and it seems to hold up well.

that jute bag idea for me came out of the practice rectangles i was making. the original motivation was to make a balaclava based on an old red cross knit pattern given to me by a friend. its the pattern called "red cross knit helmet A", used by volunteers to make winter gear for USA soldiers in WWI. I learned online and this is the one and only item I've made with this skill except the jute bag and a sling pocket. You can see some errors, but I'm happy with it. this is my second winter with it, and at 100% wool its served me well.

Nice work! My girlfriend knits, and now I have a hat and some nice warm scarves.

thanks for the link to docs; now that I see it I realize he and I crossed paths elsewhere before and I'd seen some pics of his work. as I recall he also makes slings. cool stuff:cool:

Good memory, Kevin! That was just about a year ago. I was going to post a picture of you wearing your balaclava, but decided if you wanted it posted, you would have done so.

One of these days, I'm going to learn how to knit, but haven't as of yet. I have made some different crocheted jute pouches for Altoids cans, though. I may post them later.

Here's a link to the 'survival' access to the jute in the PSK pouch. (scroll down to post 2)

Catch you later,

Doc
