I am looking for a knive to carry in my tool box in my Explorer. This would be the sort of knive you would carry in a Bug out kit. I have a canoeing axe,Sven saw & E-tool so I don't need a big knive . I'm thinking of something in a 5.5 to 6" blade length, preferably a "stainlees" steel but carbon isn't totalyy out. My first thought is a Fallkniven A1. Thougfhts and suggestions please.

See posting on KF or just drive over to San Antonio and talk to me. My brother lives in big H.

For a knife you will likely never use, but want it to work if/when you need it, the Frost's of Sweden stainless fixed blades can't be beat. Useful blade shape (pukko), easy to sharpen. The sheaths are cheesy, but they work. Plastic handle & sheath won't rot, ss blade won't rust. All for about $8.

Another alternative might be the CS Bushman/Mini Bushman. The advantage there that you can load the hollow handle with useful items and seal it up.

Since you may not use it much if at all, IMHO it would be a cheapo you don't feel bad relegating to "standby" duty. I'd recommend one of the Cold Steel mid-size fixed blades like the Survival Rescue Knife (SRK) in Carbon V or a Master Hunter in AUS8A stainless. Both can be had in the $50-$65 range and are sturdy blades that can handle some serious cutting when needed. Sounds like you've already got the chopping duties covered, otherwise I'd aim at the Becker blades for a cheap heavier-duty beater.

Bob;
If you have the money for it then you would have to look very hard to find a better knife then the A1 from Fallkniven. Seems like a waste to just throw it in a tool box but it will always be reliable when you need it.

For just plain beaters that you can stake your life on then the Cold Steel Bushman/mini-Bushman is hard to beat for the money. The CS SRK will also take a beating and come back for more but will rust very quickly if you do not keep it oiled.

Any of the Frosts of Sweden knives will do a great job of keeping you cutting when you need it too.

Check your wallet and go for the A1 Fallkniven :D :D

If you get a carbon steel blade you won't be able to just forget about it.I had one rust and bond to the sheath that was left in my tool box. But then again stainless isn't rust-proof either.

I keep a CS SRK in my car's emergency auto backpack. The way I get around it rusting is I treat the edge with Militec-1: I preheat my oven to 150 to 175 deg. F, put Militec on the edge, and put it in the oven for 30 min. Militec bonds to steel at temps above 104 deg F according to them and they say it will prevent rust for two years. As a fail safe, I apply a thin coat of Miltec to the edge before I sheath it and put it in the backpack anyway. I doesn't harm the kydex sheath any, and I just wipe it off before use if needed.

Go with the Fallkniven A1. VG-10 is an excellent rust resistant steel, which is important if you are keeping it in your vehicle. The knife is a brute, too.
