I received a Case trapper w/chrome-vanadium steel blade that seems to have developed what I assume a type of rust spots on the blade. Seeing as my BM and Kershaw knives have never even show any rust I'm not sure how I should correct/clean/maintain this blade. I'm assuming a little oiling every few days/weeks of use will help stop this, but how do I go about cleaning up the blade? Also what type of oil is suggested for use, a gun type or something else?

Some Barkeepers Friend should rub it right off. After that, lube it with mineral oil or a Tuf-Cloth.

What Josh said. Flitz is also a good metal polisher to get rid of rust on CV.

Case Crome vanadium is a high carbon steel, not stainless. You'll need to keep it lightly oiled to prevent rusting.

Case's CV is pretty much 1095 with a few elements added, if you don't oil it or have a patina, then it would rust easily when wet.

if you want to keep shiny blades, stay away from carbon steels.minor rust does'nt bother me,slice one lemon, before cleaning wait 5 min.will be discolored by time you wash.remember all the buffalo men ,pioneers, farmers etc.only had carbon blades.

Case CV is what is termed a "low alloy" steel. It is far from stainless. CV has less than 1% Chromium. I have seen several figures for how much chromium a steel alloy has to contain before being classified as "stainless". But it would be on the order of 11% chromium.

It is pretty much 1085 not 1095 with small amounts of chromium and Vanadium (less than 1% each IIRC.
