what are other knifemakers using to lay theyre knives in to take pictures. are theyre special lights one needs to buy also.

Look on eBay for "Light Tent". I bought a 20"x20" light tent for around $18 bucks. Saves the hassle of putting everything together each time you want to take a shot. It came with 3 different backgrounds as well.
I also built a PVC Frame (similar to the second thread listed above) to hold the lighting. It makes it easier to move the lights around.
