This isnt a debate Just a funny story.

I was recently on a camping trip with a group of 17-20 year olds, none of whom had much experience camping. Since I was one of two adults (the other a wheelchair bound women with less camping experience than the kids) I figured that i would be doing a lot of the camp chores.

I arrived at the site early, set up the tents and cooking area and began to work on the fire. When the kids showed up and began unpacking their stuff one noticed me building the fire and asked if he could help. When i told him he could he said "Cool Ill go get my Axe from the car" I was going to point out that I had my two hander leaning on a tree 10 feet away and my small hatchet next to me, but he seemed do excited that I let him go.

 I was surprized when he returned from the car empty handed, but continued what i was doing. I had arranged some logs in the fire pit and was about to set up my tinder and kindling . he asked if he could start the fire so I handed him my matches and took a step back.

:) This was when he Proceded to pull a can of "AXE" body spray  from his pocet and spray the logs, he flicked a few matches at them and the result was a perdictable brief flame. He tried this about three times (while I laughed) before i stopped him.

I had noticed earlier that he had a small fixed blade in his back pocket(a winchester) I told Him "Put down your axe and take out that knife" and proceeded to show him how to whittle fuzz sticks, and shave tinder, as well as to batton split larger wood for kindling. in a few minutes we had a good fire going, and by the end of the weekend the young man had become pretty adept at fire starting as well as some other basic camp skills.

No real moral here just a chance to tell as story about survival skills if not survival situation. At least i know if this kid Ever ends up in one he will most likley be able to get a fire going.

Good on you, EmsRescueGuy - maybe another new member to the forum one day. You didn't go into details but I have a feeling you're doing something nice. Good on you.

That kid will likely remember that until he's old enough to pass it on to someone else.

IMO, spraying axe in the woods is a bad idea, and not only for insects.

I don't know what they put in that, maybe some kind of generic pheromones, but according to my friend (we call him "the pimp", he always smells Axe), dogs act strangely when they smell Axe.

The last thing I want is to meet a bear sexually attracted by me.

That's funny!! :D

That young man surely will be able to enjoy his next camping trip much more, being able to make fire and all.
Who knows, maybe he'll even be able to pick up a suitable young lady showing off with his "new" skills...

Just when I thought we were going to have another tiresome and wordy "My ----- can beat up your -----!" thread, you have a real story! That is great and Thank You for sharing!

Very funny story and I'm sure you did something this kid will remember a very long time and like someone said. May pass this on to someone else.

EMS something very similar happened back in September to our scout troop. We went to the council mountain man redezvous and shared a campsite with another troop from our district. At our after dinner campfire one of their scouts started playing with a can of Axe, spraying it into the fire. Their scoutmaster thought it was great fun and even joined in. None of our scouts got involved. The next morning after they left I had to explain to our troop that behavior like that is unacceptable and dangerous.

I had no idea until then how popular Axe is. Middle and high school boys aren't allowed to shower after PE so out comes the axe.

I have a similar story from when I first became a scout. Didn't know the first thing about fire (was a TRUE tenderfoot). Scoutmaster had some words with me and twelve years later, I am teaching younger guys exactly what he taught me. (He also said that any kind of cologne in the backcountry is just weight that doesn't need to be toted along.)

It is people like you, EMS, that make a difference in the world. Keep on investing the time and you will see good come of it! You are a true saint!

That is a great story. TLC has it right.... I don't want any of my friends sniffin my AXE:eek:

Good point, some friends of mine about 11 years ago had 2 sons that were playing with another kid from their neighborhood, spraying brake cleaner on a log and lighting it. At some point, one of them sprayed a huge amount of it and when the nieghbor kid leaned over to light it, it flashed the fumes around him and he was severaly burned.

yeah the axe...my ex-neighbor used to walk out on his front step everyonce in a while with his axe and the lighter he stole from his mom, and have fun playing flame thrower for a few minutes. noone ever really said something to him, and i wonder if someday he will do that and somehow burn off his eyebrows or something...

good work. i can't believe he actually did that! the only time that sort of thing works is when you put it on the fine wood shavings. then the shavings will light on fire with just a spark of the firesteel, or a touch of the match. please note that i have only done this with appropriate fire fuels and not axe or anything of the like
