and I wonder if there are knife-shops I should visit (or where I can find the adresses) ?
Anything specific I should know about buying knives in the States ? (probably better not buy knives with blades larger than 4 inches)
Could I get into trouble when I put knives in my luggage ?

Thanks,
Philip

I am just out of the city, and I have yet to actually find a nice mom & pop style shop where I can ask questions, as well as buy something.

If transport is available, I rek'mnd Outdoor Sports about 35 miles east of NYC in Farmingdale on Long Island. It is centraly located on rte 110, of of both the LIE and the Southern Parkway.

Prices are a bit higher than on the net, but they have a heck of a selection...

The true knife nut on staff there is MIKE, a little guy with a booming voice!

Other than that, I couldn't help you, sorry.

take care,

steve in nyc

Philip, welcome to the Forums. I think you'll have a great time in NYC, but it's not a great place to buy knives. Like most everything else here, it's just too expensive.
I buy all my knives Online. If you want a good place to look at a good selection of production and custom knives, Paragon Sports on 18th St. and Broadway is probably your best bet. http://www.paragonsports.com/scripts/vsc.exe/cknives.htm?L+paragon+mrrw8015+945550448

I've heard rumors of other places, but I sure haven't seen them.

Philip, check out Paragon at any cost. Nice selection (and VERY EXPENSIVE!!!). Even many custom knives. Prices from $30 to $3000 (!). Look for Rich who is a nice guy and more than happy to show you many. He is also a knife-fan and loves to chat about it. Mention Blade Forums, he used to hang out here.

Have a nice trip,

HM

Hey Guy,

I live in NYC. When u get here do visit Paragon. And yes go talk to Rich aka"Knifeboy". Yes I am serious. He is probably the only one of any knowledge there. Paragon is located on 18th Street and Broadway.

There is also a little knife shack on 42th Street and 6th Avenue. There is a Asian dude there and he has a lot of Microtechs, MOD, Spydie, Benchmades. There is no name just look into the store front for some knives then go inside to see the show case. Bargin with him. He is a good guy to deal with.

There is also Iceberg which is on Broadway and I think it is right off Canal St. It is an Army n Navy and has some Benchmades, MOD, Microtech, but also a lot of junk.

There is also Barrett-Smyth. It is on 81th Street. The number there is (212)249-5500. But they r really expensive. Prices start at $2500. Yes that is correct.

That is all I know of in NYC. Wish there is more but most of us buy off the net. Thanks and hope this helps.

We've discussed this a few times before and it still amazes me how few knife places there are in NYC, The B-Smythe gallery is very high end and expensive, but a blast if you're interested in that. The selection at Paragon is very good, but the prices are insultingly stupid. Eveything is at least 20% overpriced, and more like 50%. It is nice to see and handle them, though.
There are a few Surplus/sporting places in and near SOHO but every now and then there are some nice customs, sometimes on sale, in the Madison Avenue shops like Beretta and some of the Southwestern stores/galleries too.
AS far as legal restrictions and problems with luggage, I can't say what's lawfu; in NYC but I doubt that knives are the biggest problem the police have; just about any blade can be checked through in your luggage, if it's legal to import to your country. Hand luggage is rather different, of course.

In Flushing, in the "Busy Mall", there's a guy named Eddie who sells knives, lighters, UC swords, etc.. He also does some really top-notch sharpening if you're too lazy to do it yourself (for a price, of course).

He's really up on his stuff and also does some custom work of his own. If you talk to him about knives and stuff, he'll cut you a discount ranging roughly within $5 - $15 of 1sks's prices (e.g., I got a CRKT Bear Claw from him for $30, 1SKS sells it for $24.99).

Address is:
Busy Mall
37-12 Main Street
Flushing, NY 11354

And about your luggage and what not, you should be okay if you check everything in your luggage. If you carry something on to the plane in your bag or on your person, you better make sure it's non-threatening (e.g., no serrations or combo edges or strange blade shapes) and it's a 3" blade or shorter. Even these guidelines won't guarantee that you won't have problems -- the security personnel at the gates make the final calls.

Thanks all.
I was hoping to find knife shops on every corner, but apparently I will have to look a bit harder (and pay a bit more

).

Still I am hoping to return a "sharp dressed man"
