I used to have about 20 hens and two roosters. I used to feed my hens laying mash. But then the rat started coming around. They were fun target practice but there was too many rats. And then of course a dog would come in once in awhile and eat one or two of them. I'm thinking about doing it again due to the price of eggs where I live go as high as $7 a dozen. We just went grocery shopping I got them on sale for $4 a dozen. But the other thing about it is the chicken feed is not cheap anymore so I'm not sure if it's even worth it. How much is a 50 lb sack of chicken feed Purina cost these days?

I wouldn't worry about egg prices, for a little while anyway.

The ladies are busy this time of year. The different coloured shells are from different breeds of chickens. The blue-green ones are laid by Ameraucanas, the lightest beige ones are from Speckled Sussex chickens, the regular beige ones from Buff Orpingtons, and the darker brown one near the end of the knife handle is from a Cuckoo Maran. I prefer having heritage breeds, who might not always lay eggs every day, but lay for years longer than the battery hens that are done after three years. The knife is a Cudeman MT5.

Well this thread caught my eye. Just finishing up a chicken coup this weekend hopefully…except for rain the next 3 days. Nice pics!
