Some of you may have seen my recent post about my new carving set (it's a David Murphy original (thank you, but no applause is necessary)).
Well, I got a chance to use it the other day with company coming over for dinner. I put a wonderful tablecloth, a one-of-a-kind made by a local artist, that I bought at a local art fair years ago, on my table. I set out the hand-made placemats that I also got at a local craft fair last year. I set out my plates which were custom-made for me by a couple up in Tigard, Oregon. I got out my hand-made original Murphy carving set. And then I started to place the rest of my flatwear, the dinner knives, the forks, the spoons, etc., and realized that they were mass-produced in Korea.
Now, I have nothing against Korea. They're very nice. But, they're mass-produced and they're ordinary.
I've seen custom makers following Murphy's lead and still making fine carving sets. I've seen very nice custom-made steak knives.
But, does anyone custom-make the rest of the place setting, table knives, forks, spoons, etc.?
