Knives and Preparedness

The local news here (St. Louis) on the CBS affilitate showed a lockback knife with a clip as part of an emergency preparedness kit.
It was just a quick image, but I'm always happy when a knife is shown as something positive and life saving.

Geeze, what would happen if a terrorist got ahold of your emergency preparedness kit and used the knife to commit unspeakable acts? Come to think of it, most emergency preparedness kits have some sort of firestarting materials too. This could lead to a wave of arson the likes of which we have never seen. Better start the legislative process rolling so we can ban emergency preparedness kits.

PS-- it is nice to see knives portrayed in a positive light.

That's refreshing news. Now they just need to add a knife especially for self-defense or to combat a terrorist.

These are useful tools.

Very good to see that.

I have had this idea in the back of my mind for awhile, and your post brought it to the forefront. What I would like to see is a knife advocacy page that would list all the positive, legal uses of edged tools by category. Some examples of categories might be outdoor and sporting activities, safety and rescue services, cooking and other household activities, hobbies and crafts, every day conveniences, and on-the-job tasks. For each category, it could have some examples of knives that are used for that purpose and some links to news stories or "testimonials".

The page could also have a FAQ for non-knife knuts. Instead of going into the technical details that we all enjoy, it could answer some of the questions that we face all the time from others in the general public, like "why do you carry that thing?". Maybe such a page exists already, but if so, I'm not aware of it. AKTI has some educational brochures, but not this type of web page.

Just my $0.02...;)

Why is it that we don't see any mainstream ads for "edged tools?" Why don't Spyderco and Benchmade advertise on the radio, in magazines, or on TV?

Sorry I missed that one..but...1 more point scored for the knife community.

I agree. You always see cool toys, like the SureFires, in CSI. I wish knives were also depicted. It would seem to me that folding knives would be invaluable in poking around or slicing around evidence.

But like T. Erdelyi said, let's take any positive publicity.

I normally don't watch TV, but on one episode of CSI: Miami, they were researching a few fixed blades to see which one was used in a murder. I believe one of them was a Mission MPT.

I think it was negative publicity, since one of the characters said something along the lines of "What's a civilian doing with a military knife like this?"

I just got the feeling that they were implying that it's inherently wrong to carry a deadly weapon.
