Some friends and I are going to the Cloisters and the Met this weekend--

Now, I've been to the cloisters recently and had no problems with, ah, overzeaous security. But when my father visited Ellis Island last week, they had metal detectors tuned high enough to pick up his zipper.

Sooo... Anybody been to the Met lately? Do they have metal detectors? Had any trouble with your EDC?

We're going in on public transit, so "leaving it in the car" isn't an option. It's either carry-in-the-museum or go-knifeless-all-day [shivver!] ;)

Thanks

I was there about 4 months ago. They searched bags, but had no metal detectors.

Do not wear your knife exposed though, like clipped on your front pocket where the clip can still be seen. They understandably get upset what with all the paintings and all, even pre-9-11.

Thanks for the replies, guys. Looks like I'm carrying.

Before I set sail, though, a quick BTTT for anybody who might've been to the Met in the last couple weeks (great arms&armor exhibit there...)--I'm a little concerned they may have picked up a minor case of Septemberitis.

The Met is in the middle of central park... go into the bushes like you're taking a leak and stash it under some shrubs or something. Wrap in it a little bit of newspaper and put a layer of dirt over it. I've cached all sorts of stuff in Central Park when I was a kid... Just make sure no one sees you do it... another stash option is the Newspaper vending machines... It takes X amount of money to open one so it's less susceptable to random people noticing that it's there...

Toss the quarter or so in the machine and tuck the knife somewhere not visible. With the same amount, you retrieve your blade. Your best bet is the USA today machine... I can't think of one idiot in NYC that reads that.

edited to add...I've been to the met this Februrary and the Arms and Armor exhibit was unchanged at that point.

There's some new stuff to see now.

As of September 4, there's a "notable acquisitions" room attached to the Arms & Armor exhibit. Most interesting to me were a pretty presentation Colt, a Yataghan from the 1530's (the ornaments on the hilt were a bit over-the-top, but the inward curve of the blade was gorgeous), a medieval pistol-axe, and a few Japanese blades.

Also, attached to the Greco-Roman wing there's a special exhibit on the bronze-age Eurasian steppes. They had some really interesting inward-curved bronze knives. Kinda like tiny little utility khukris. Apparently, there's no photography allowed in special exhibits... A fact that the security guard mentioned as I snapped a picture of the last knife in the exhibit :D

All in all, a good trip. And not a metal detector to be found at either site.
