as nice as it is for a knife collecter to get a knife for birthday/christmas/whatever the holiday, it seems like people rarely hit the nail on the head.

two examples:
-My aunt, who purchased me a leatherman Kick when i was in dire need of a multitool (good)
-My parents, who purchased me an 8 pack of brandless chinese knives from big 5, 3 of which were broken in the box, all but 2 broke within the first month.

share your thoughts on knife gifting and/or share some of your experiences in the subject!

btw, if anyone wants to buy me a RAT RC-3, that'd be nice :)

I received a Nakamura for Father's day from my wife. It was a really cool gift i wasn't expecting. My parents gave me a SAK for Christmas a while back in my youth. I have been lucky.

Knives make great gifts. After you learn a bit about knives you almost feel bad giving a Frost Cutlery (us type) knife as a present to even a kid. They invaribly look up what they cost on line and think you're a cheap scate. I rationalize the whole experience and say that the blade was purchased to be used by a kid who will most likely loose it 6 months after you give it to them. When they get older, they'll need a better knife and know how to treat and use it.

SAK's always make good presents as do most Case brand knives. I don't recommend trying to buy a special knife as a gift unless you know precisely what they want and are willing to spend the money. Spyderco blades aren't a bad choice either.

I give knives as gifts, and I don't give anything that I myself wouldn't like. My Uncle is also a knife knut, and he gives me knives that aren't so good. But, I REALLY appreciate them, because my Uncle gave it to me.
My spouse gets me a custom knife for Christmas.

I think knives are a great gift. If giveing I try to give a good quality knife suited to the receiver.
My wife gave me a very nice antique 50's vintage Case Bulldog with stag handles, for my birthday. it is not in perfect condition. For me this was good because now I carry and use it. Had it been mint I would not have used or carried it. So sometimes less is better.

I have gotten junkers from family members before, but what are you going to do, tell them its junk? I either stash it in my tool box, or toss it in my tackle box. I've got a Chinese made Western, that, with the blade thinned out, doesn't do too bad when fishing. My favorite knife gift, though, is a knife my little brother made out of a popsicle stick when he was 8 or 9. Shaped it, painted it, looks like a crude bowie knife.

I got my best friend at college a SAK engraved with her name on the handle as a birthday gift :) She LOVED/LOVES it and has it with her at all times now...well, pretty much at all times, anyhow ;)

I have received many knives as gifts and they cover the entire spectrum from Fantastic to Utter Crap.

On the high end, Wife always buys something from the AG Russell catalog. She's pretty good at snooping to see which catalog pages I'm looking at the longest.

On the low end, F-I-L gave me a Chinese knife-shaped object, something you'd find at a very low-end gift shop, with a plastic molded handle that's shaped like a bald eagle. No offense to the giver, but it is sincerely one of the ugliest things I've ever seen. Probably from his own gift shop, so at least he didn't pay too much for it.

In the middle, I've received many factory knives from Buck, Gerber, Bear, etc.

One of the most unique knives I've received was one that Brother made from a kit. The handles are oak, scavenged from a barn being demolished that our grandfather had build by hand in the 1940s.

My wife and daughters will only get me a knife as a gift if I've hinted about a particular model.

On the other hand, a few years before my mother passed away, my mother and father bought me a no-brand Chinese knife while buying a few things at a local hardware store (for no occasion). It's a prized procession and in a place in my home where I can see it every day....

As part of a knife deal I received a little 'Frost Family' Chinese made canoe style slip joint, very pretty little thing with brass bolsters and blue tinted bone scales.

My Mom was over for dinner on Saturday and mentioned she lost her little SAK...SO I want in the knife drawer and presented it to her after dinner, and she was thrilled!

Most of my closest friends and family have been gifted with something, and I've never had complaints about that. Heck, just try to get something back from one of 'em!! ;)

Knives make great gifts I am going to get my Step father an sog fusion muscle car

I give them as gifts, sometimes. Prefer not to get them unless it's from someone who knows what I want.
I've gotten several gifts in the form of knives and some other stuff that I used to collect. Mostly cheap junk. Rarely do they make it past the trash can and into the house.
For gifts, I've mostly given Victorinox SAKs and lightweight Spydercos. Small Leatherman tools like the Micras and Squirts. I do try to give something appropriate to the person's lifestyle, not something that I just like(but sometimes that's what they get, too!):)
