Knives at a Gun Show (or Meeting an Old Man)

It’s been a very long time since I’ve been able to buy pocketknives for myself. I found a couple at a gunshow I walked today. The fella with the table was a bit older fella, and took a few minutes getting up to come over my way. He also was hard of hearing and also talked real quiet.

I leaned over and told my friend, “uh-oh. I got him outta that chair. Now I’m gonna HAVE to buy somethin from him!”

But it was fun visiting with him about the various knives he had out, and I enjoyed helping him dig around looking for a certain one I wanted.

I came away with a couple of Bokers-a 4” congress and a medium stockman with strawberry seed handles. Perspective of the picture makes them seem odd-sized. The congress is bigger than the stockman. They are both right and tight, with a ton of snap and nicely cleaned and sharpened.

It was fun to visit with that old man, and he had some really nice knives that were well-cared for. I’m glad I got him outta that chair.

Wonderful. I love both those patterns and you walked away with both a Boker USA and a Boker Solingen. What a productive day.

I have yet to purchase one of those step bolster congresses, but I find the large congress pattern to be the most useful in my daily life. If I could just remember which of the sheepsfoot blades is sharp and which is dull before I start cutting, I would be doing great.

He had a very nice boker camp knife that i was tempted to include, but my fun money was gone.

He seemed intent on finding that congress-took him a little while to remember where he put it.

Those are some great finds! Both of those knives have been well-loved, but have plenty of life in them. That Congress especially looks great.

Good story, too. Always nice to have those little memories of where and how you got a knife, versus it just showing up in the mail.

I have a few memories from when I was first into looking for Case knives, trying to find all of the still-operating local dealers in my area, checking out their old stock, doing a lot of window shopping, and finding a few nice ones that had to go home with me.

Nice finds! That Congress is one of my favorite Boker patterns, I like their blade selection and the carbon steel takes a nice edge👍

Interesting story. Thanks for sharing. I don’t currently have a boker but I had a stockman many years. I got it from a friend at work. It has been his moms, and I swapped him a kershaw fillet knife for it. Man it would take an amazing edge. I whittled with it quite a while but I eventually gifted it to that friends son, also a friend. I don’t know if he appreciated it that it was his grandmothers. I hope so.
