Some manufacturers place serial numbers on their knives. Buck, for instance, released their Strider series with an initial production run marked #/500. Al Mar used to number the first 200 units of their production run, while some Gerber knives have serial numbers in the 10s of thousands.
But, what do these numbers really mean. Does anyone have a good resource for the original production records. I know that Buck used a better (BG-42) of steel in their numbered run, but, did Al Mar do something similar, or has Gerber changed its steel/ or design over the many thousands of units produced?
Then we have the makers that produce limited runs of 500 knives, however, all the knives are marked 1 of 500 in stead of #/500. How can we keep track of these irregularities?
Any thoughts?
