Don't know about Santa Barbara (I'm originally from northern California -- San Francisco), except that it's supposed to be a pretty nice area. In general for the state of CA:

Fixed blades cannot be concealed. Period (technically, a fixed sheepsfoot blade should be legal for concealed carry, but I wouldn't care to be the one to put that idea to the test).

No limit on folder length or concealed carry.

OC. Legal, but only for self defense. :D

I suspect that there's not much chance that an out-of-state CCW permit is going to be recognized, unless your wife is an LEO. If folks who live and work in California can't get one . . . :grumpy:

thanks for the info, thays pretty much what i thought, will let her carry the BM mini stryker and my cammilus maxx, and she can pick up some OC in cali, dispose of it on way to airport.

thanks again

a few years ago, I asked one of the officers working in my city( near S.F.) this exact same question as well as others too. His exact wording "You can carry a long sword a short one or a one in between whenever you want here, just as long as I can see it a mile away."

Santa Barbara is one of the more beautiful areal in So Cal.There's great dining, beautiful scenery and an awesome climate. If only realestate wasn't so expensive, I'd live there myself. I hope one day to retire to Montecito, which is just south of SB.

dsvirsky seems to have hit the nail on the head with regards to your questions about carry.

If you have a couple hours while you're in the neighborhood, you can drive north about 40 minutes and get to Solvang, CA. Solvang is a great little Danish tourist town in th ecentral coasy winery area. Solvang is also host to Nordic Knives. Nordic is an incredible knife store with the best selection of custom makers I've ever seen anywhere outside of a custom maker only show. It's easy to spend a couple days in Solvang shopping, but just to see what they've got at Nordic is worth the trip alone.

If you need dining recommendations, just ask. I live about an hour south, but get to SB pretty often as I have a coupl eaccounts there.

enjoy,

Like was said santa barbra is beautiful.. I love going up there to visit(i live south in huntington beach another beautiful place)

As for carry i would suggest leaving the gun at home and take the knives, the main thing is not doing anything stupid. Honestly I've lived here all my life and i've been carryign knives since i was 12 (i am now 18) and I have never had a problem with them becasue I haven't drawn attention to myself. and I carry plenty of illegal things becasue I would rather have them and not need them. I believe santa brarbra is pretty safe, there used to be some areas that were a little shady but I think they are cleaned up. but have a great time and make sure you go to all the restraunts there, the food is awesome.

If your wife has any reason to be on the campus of the university at SB, let her know that all school campuses, including public universities, have essentially a complete ban on knives (you can only carry them if needed for work and you have approval from the school admin). I spent 4 years at UCSB, and wish I'd studied less, and spent more time enjoying the place.

State law bans all fixed blades larger than 2.5" but there is no limit on folding knives. Folding knives over 2.5" are banned on K-12 campuses.

I went to UC Santa Barbara, so I've spent quite a bit of time in the area. If there's a place with more perfect climate, I don't think it is on Earth.

Honestly, I would say that most of Santa Barbara is safe, and you have very little to worry about. There are a lot of police around due to the Students at the UC, and for the most part, there are few problems.

Parts of IV (Isla Vista - in Goleta, by the school) can be a bit iffy, and a few areas downtown aren't as nice, but the rest of SB is super nice. Even the iffy areas are nicer than 90% of Los Angeles. As long as she keeps her wits about her, she'll be fine.

Forget fixed blades, guns, or batons. Folders are basically ok, but as with all things, keep it within reason. I don't believe there is a length limit by State or County law, but you might want to look up the codes online. There is a limit on OC can size, I believe it is 2 or 2.5 oz's. She could pick up some in town.

As for other information... The beach is nice. The beach by the school is very beautiful, especially the point, but has some tar in the sand. If she wants to visit the beach by the UC, have her take some baby oil to help get the tar off her feet (don't wear nice shoes on the beach). The beach by downtown is basically clear of tar. The water is probably a bit cold for swimming right now.

I would also recommend a good rain coat and umbrella, as it is an El Nino year, and it will probably rain pretty good at least once while she's there.

In downtown is State Street, which is a lot of fun. Its sort of a touristy/shopping street that runs for around a mile or so. Lots of shopping, restaurants, coffee places and some excellent bars as well. Right by the end of State Street is the Pier, which is nice (if it hasn't burned down again :) )

If she has time, there are some boat tours of the islands that are fun. I believe that this time of year, there are some whale watching boats around too.

The mountains are very close. There's some good hiking and camping within a short drive, as well as some amazing views of the ocean and city.

Santa Barbara is a very nice place. She should have a great time.

I am a student at UC Santa Barbara, and have never had any problems with any of the folding knives that I carry.

Some cities /towns have their own laws that supercede State law. I would stay away from bringing a fixed blade to carry openly or concealed. Take a look at the web page http://www.ninehundred.com/~equalccw/knifelaw.html .
Here’s a quote from the site listed above. “Los Angeles and a few other SoCal cities have a town ordinance banning the carry of knives over 3". In SOME cases, it's phrased as a ban on big stuff of any sort carried openly, so that excludes fixed-blades and the open-carry of big folders, but you can still conceal (and LEAVE concealed until needed to save a life) a large folding knife. “

Like stated above in some other posts, there is not a state limit on folder blade length. I have been asked to show my Cuda Maxx to an Officer on one occasion and although it did raise his eyebrows, I was given the knife back and sent home. But this was in the East (San Francisco) Bay Area not Oakland or San Francisco and I wasn’t the person the P.O. was really interested in, just in his line of sight and he saw a knife on a clip in my right front pocket. I really think that he was looking to see if it was an auto.

I would also suggest going to www.google.com and doing a search on “California knife laws”. The site listed above was the first one to come up.

Also as an FYI, most if not all of these sites are not operatedd by a lawyer and I don’t think they would do much good if you met the wrong P.O. at the wrong time and he wanted to give you/your wife a hard time even if you had printed it out and carried it with you.
