Knives for Kids...and Date Codes

I think I'm going to get the kiddos something that was made in the year they were born. I have a 2000 and 2002 baby. How hard will it be to find something with those date codes? What would be a good knife to give them, later on, that they can use as well as keep forever? 110 comes to mind, perhaps a pretty fixed blade?

I appreciate the input.

500 Duke without question:thumbup: Available in both years, not to big, not too small so regardless off preference should work. Tough enough to perform anything a 110 can, will get respect with the boys and slim and classy to carry in a dressed up situation.

First off Casey I applaud you for making this decission and moving on it in behalf of your small children . It speaks many good things about you . Second, I agree with Imafritz, the Duke is a great choice . I'm a 110 fan yet have been carrying my Heritage Duke and really like it . Its my bird and trout knife and small game/ trapper . About the right size for everyday use . Theres other styles available in that same size . DM

500 sounds like a great option. Where are these available, though? I guess I'm not looking in the right places?

I'd start them off with a slipjoint 300 series or a 525 lock back. Sometimes kids have trouble pressing the bar release to close the blade on a lock blade. Both of my boys had started knife collections when they were 4 & 6 years old, and still have most of them....minus the blade tips on a few ;):D

Thanks, Pack Rat. Still curious about where to get a 500, though.

Auction site is best bet but it will take some looking. 110 may or may not be easier to find-looking for individual date codes is diligence and luck.

I would have a custom shop 110 made for each kid. It's cool when you get to choose the materials the knife is made from.Maybe even have them help pick the materials. The custom shop can also engrave their initials on the bolsters, nice personal touch.Done that way,the knife will really mean something.:)
