Knives for my kids...

As I've noticed prices on nice older Case knives going up and up, and the limited selection available in CV, I decided it would be wise to pick up some knives for my boys (and girls) to have as they get older.

My oldest is 11, and isn't interested in carrying a knife - although she does when we go camping/hiking. I've spent some time with her to teach knife safety, and she's enjoyed a little whittling (aka making big sticks into small sticks). She will probably get an SAK when she decides to start carrying a purse regularly.

My boys are younger at 2 and 1, and I have another girl due next month. For the boys, I just picked up a matched pair of Texas jacks -

I also just stumbled on a nice 06247PEN, which is a pattern I really like! I might have to keep this one for me.

On eBay

Is anyone else stashing away knives for their children well in advance?

My twin girls are now 5 years old, and they love watching their dad selesct the knives that I will carry for the day. One of them never fails to ask when she will be old enough.

Since they were born, I have cut their nails using the scissors on a Victorinox classic, and that may be what I will start them with. I have not decided yet.

I have, however, in the hope that they will be interested, purchased matching customs (with different scale materials) for them from 3 makers so far. All of them are traditional patterns.;)

My son is 9 and a knife nut. So far his collection is at 10 knives, about half are imports he picked out on his own.

I have given him some decent, yet inexpensive, beginner knives. A 4-blade Ulster BSA,5-Blade Imperial BSA,and two Imperial jack-masters.And just this weekend his first USA Old Timer,a duplicate 104OT Minuteman I had, and a Kabar (Camillus) 1081 medium stockman.

He loves slipjoints and 1095 carbon.

Yep have both a boy (4) and girl (almost 2). Each as Alox SAK Cadet and Farmer with their intials. I also "retired" my Queen Swing Guard for him since it's the knife that seems to have caught his eye.

I am lucky to keep a new knife for a week without it being claimed by a family member, sad that be fore "hello" or "how are you today" I hear "what knife you carrying today?". Put them away for the kids? I need to put a few away for myself...lol.

I've purchased knives for both of my chillins. My daughter is 21 and enjoys the addiction. . . .when I'm purchasing something for her. :D She's not a "folksy" kinda person. . . . .prefers frame locks and autos. Heavy on the autos ! My son, 13, is more into fixed blades. . . . .and guns.

Absolutely. When my boy was born I immediately ordered him a couple of knives to start his Collection, a youth model Mora and a youth model Opinel. The youth Opinel is similar to any other, but has a rounded blade tip. The youth Mora will make a nice Father-Son Project Knife when the boy is older, sanding and staining the handle, and staining the sheath.

He also has a Victorinox toy knife that he's been playing with since 6mo old.

Still on the list, I'd like to get him a good traditional Case knife, like the carbon steel stockman. But since he's only 2, there's no hurry. :)

I gave my kids each a knife when they got of age, and they got another one along the way. My son Matt, got the boyscout knife at age 12 that my dad gave me when I was 12. He's still carrying it in his pocket. Then about a year and a half ago, I made a major cutback on my stuff, and I gave away most of my knife accumulation to my kids, niece, nephews, and grandkids. Everyone picked out what they wanted from my stuff, I just kept a few of the ones I used the most and had sentimental attachment to.

It was fun giving away my stuff when I was around to see them enjoy it.

My girls mostly "Oh Daddy" me when they see a knife they like.
And get a less expensive substitute.

I give them 'user and loosers'.
That they are plenty good enough to use, but cheap enough to loose.
So Rough Rider, Warrior Steel, and CRKT are really good starter.
And SAK Classics and Tinkers (with the corkscrew).
Bryd Ravens with the less than 2" blade.

They all have a Classic and a Raven for their keyrings.

My 12 year old got a Tiny Toothpick, and thinks it so fancy...
My then 14 year old got a CRKT Spectra Peck, super cool...

My 18 year old saw my Queen Abalone Copperhead and wanted it!
Sorry Kid!
But she got a Queen Abalone Senator for her 18th birthday.
But that's a keeper.

They all have their little collections....
