Knives for my son

My 13-year old son has been showing some interest in knives, along with outdoor stuff in general, the last couple of years. He started whittling a couple of years back and recently has developed a serious interest in knotwork. Since he uses knives enough that having to borrow mine every time would be a nuisance for both of us, I've passed along a couple of knives to him.

The green handled stockman is nothing fancy, just a Frost's Outrider that I picked up at Bass Pro, but it does a good job for him as a whittling knife.

I just gave him the Mercury Marlinspike knife this evening. He has been spending so much time with a couple of chunks of rope and Ashley's book on knots that I figured he could use something to unpick the knots to keep his fingertips from getting sore.

I figure there will be plenty more as time goes by, but these are getting him off to a decent start.

popedandy,

Here you go, a knife and rope project for your son.......he only needs a couple of pieces of hardware. If you are going to go on salt water may have to buy SS at boat shop. If only a freshwater sailor then the hardware store. Tell him he needs to be able to tie bowline in the dark, while treading water.....around his waist....one handed. It's doable.

Talk about traditional skills!!

Get him to learn splicing and turk heads
These are a skill of the past!

For splicing he will need a marlinspike
He will be able to make some fancy lanyards

This is a great link
