Knives for my sons.

I have been lurking for a little while now and thought I would get involved in some discussion with you fine folks in the form of a few questions.

First off, I have two sons, one 4 years and the other 4 months. I have been wanting to find something that I can get for them that would mean a lot to both myself and my sons. I thought of getting a knife that was release from the month and year of their births. Or possibly just the year. My question is other then GEC what companies can I look at that chronicle the release dates of their products? I want to actually carry the knife until I believe they have come to the age to properly take care of a knife and won't lose one. So it will be some years of wear.

Have any of you ever done something like this before?

Thank you.

Gabe

I believe case has a series that includes birth dates on the shield. They also have a date system on the tang of the knife. I like Case, and have had pretty good luck with them. Shameless Opinel plug- if you order from the Opinel site, they can engrave the blade/handle with anything you could think of. They have a rosewood #6 on the site now that looks gorgeous. Honest answer, though, any knife will be a treasure if you use it and use it while spending time with them; they'll love it.

Case has a Tang Stamp that is coded for the year is was made. Go to WRCase.com, click on Case College and it will show you how to tell what year the knife was made. They are also easy made in large numbers so it should be no problem to find knives that match your requirements. They also do a good job with their bone handles with lots of colors and choices.

I had the same idea which is actually the very search that got me addicted to traditional knives and GEC knives in particular. I searched GEC's site and found a couple of knives that were realeased on the day my son was born. Then I found an example of each that was serialized so it also comes with a certificate of authenticity that shows the date right on the card. I also got one that was released on his first birthday. It becomes a good excuse to be able to buy a new knife after a while. :)

I've done this. I picked my favorite knife, a GEC 33 Conductor, and purchased one for myself and one for each of my sons. I'll use mine, they'll get theirs when they are old enough.

Thank you gentleman for the info. I will look into the case college it seems like useful information in general. And the Opinel engraving is a great idea. I do really want a GEC though. Maybe I will do all three! Then they can have options and I have 6 knives to put to work! The latter sounds excellent I must admit.

You are going to fit in here just fine! ;) By the way welcome to Bladeforums and you've come to the right sub-forum. The members that frequent the traditional forum are the best of the best. Send me a pm or email if you are looking for a particular pattern or date of GEC and i'll do what I can to help you out.

For your 4 month old you can go to this link here and find which knife was made on or close to his birthdate. http://greateasterncutlery.net/blog/pocket-knives/2014-new-releases/

This link will get you to knives made in 2010 which I'm guessing is the year your 4 year old was born. http://greateasterncutlery.net/blog/pocket-knives/new-release-page/

Thank you so much! I may take you up on that offer jkulysses when I come to a dissision. Thanks again for all the information gentleman.

I purchased 5 GEC made Schrade trappers. A large and medium for me, and one of the mediums for each of my sons. I gave those two to their grandpa, and papa (my dad). Then, when they come of age, grandpa and papa can hand them over. They will each get a knife carried by both. (Papa has the schrade, and GEC barlow.... He also has a grand dad barlow identical to my S&M file and wire). Grandpa has the other GEC Schrade, and a Case stockman I gave him to pass on. I also have three fixed blades that were carried by his own father (great grandpa to my boys).

I have an old barlow carried by my own grandfather, and will be getting two of his old hickory kitchen knives that he used to Butcher cows with when my own dad was a boy.

Both my boys will have knives that are 4 generations old.

Both started out with an old Buck that I ground the edge and point off of. Now, but have Opinels to use (though the 4 year Olds I took the edge down and a tiny bit if the point, because he is still learning ).

Excuse the poor old photos.

The bocote barlow is one I gave my dad (papa as the boys call him)

Mine, out making good memories.
