There have been quite a few folks who began their first attempts at knife-making after being influenced by folks here. Some of those friends, like Andy Roy, have gone on to even making knives full-time.

I've been teaming with friend Sam Owens for the last year. I think up stuff, and after a back and forth process between us, he makes it. Well. :D Sam has a real gift for bringing my designs to life, usually making them even better than I anticipated.

Since I"ve been in theater this time, I've become aware of a major problem of sexual assault on service members and other US citizens over here. It happens to males and females, and I've actually heard of more assaults on men than women.

Spyderco and Benchmade are the only companies that I know have made knives from rustproof H1 steel. Having met Sal Glesser of Spyderco several times, and knowing his interest in protecting our service members, I've asked him to consider making an "always" knife of H1 steel, so our deployed service members can have a knife with them, even in the shower*. I thought y'all might enjoy seeing what Sam and I have come up with so far.

*Even in an environment where you "always" carry a firearm, firearms aren't taken to the gym or showers with us.

Peace,

John

That's awesome, John. I have been a fan of H1 for several years now. From salt water to pure chlorine, NOTHING rusts it.
I'd love a knife like that:)

We'll see how it turns out. I'd love to make a better mousetrap, but if Spyderco comes up with a better solution for service members (and others willing to protect themselves), I'll still be happy. :)

Thank you!

Sam's working on a ringed model- in G10, initially. Not loving it, so far. Maybe it'll get better once the ring is set in. :o

I've started another thread on this elsewhere. (I can't usually access picture hosting services in-country, so it's easier to post pics at THR, where I can just attach them to posts.)

There are some pics of the ringed version. So far, Sam and I don't like it as much.

the blade you showed me when you came to visit was reall nice (the one you said you desgned and your friend made) - good design, nice feel and solid build - i would be interested in one - just sayin

sorry to not have kept op with comunications -- hope you are safe and healthy

Eric

I've learned a lot from BladeForums, and HI in particular. That knife, which is my favorite, is 5160, with all the lessons the kuks have taught me built in.

Eric, it's okay to have a life, buddy. I also understand that it's hard to reach out sometimes when you're feeling enough pain. :(

Looking great, John:) I'd be very interested in one should they come to fruition.

Thanks, Jake. The ideal would be for Spyderco to make them. If not, Sam could always make them in G10 or something like BD-1. Assuming I can actually get in contact with Alpha Knife Supply to order the BD-1...

these look real nice

Well, Sam's kept at it, though something about 5 kids and a busy job is slowing him down... :D
