Knives in college

I am (planning on) going to college next year. If anyone cares, or went to any of the colleges, I am applying to UNC (Chapel Hill), Duke, App. State, and U. Pitt.
I want a BM 705 or 710 for Hanukah, but I want to be able to take it to school next year. Basically, I need to know if most colleges, especially those I mentioned, allow students to posess and/or carry knives on campus. I know UNC Charlotte does not. If they do, are their limits on length (such as 3-4" limits, which would apply to the aforementioned knives). I know you're thinking "RETARD, hello! Call the friggin' schools!," but I am worried that doing so might send the wrong message, such as, "This guy is a psycho! I don't want him at this school!" Maybe I'm being paranoid, but it seems that they are really weird where admissions are concerned.
Any information or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your time
Howie

Howie, I am in college and I carry a folder with a 3.5" blade daily. I don't think it's a big deal, just don't let anyone see it that's all. Don't be showing it off, people will tell on you. People can be very paranoid. Good Day.

Just be glad you are not going to college UC Berkeley, California. Get caught carrying a small folder or saying you are against banning ALL guns, you are instantly labeled a criminal or a right-wing extremist.

I go to Berkeley. I have never had a problem with carrying anything here. Nobody cares, even though it is illegal to have them in your dorms. Actually people laugh at most of my knives...it's sad.

I'm also in college and carry my small sebenza everyday. I'm just careful about when I use it. If you really are not sure, I suggest you not carry one. Better safe than sorry.

Howie,
I go to the University of Washington, and haven't had any problems with my knives. Like everyone has stressed, don't make a huge thing about it, and no one will care. It's not if you have a knife, it's what you're planning to use it for that would concern school administrators or the campus police. I use my Spyderco Wegner at work on campus. My boss thinks it's a little big, but doesn't have that much of a problem with it...especially since he's had to borrow it.

Good luck with the college application process. I remember how stressful it was. You're not alone.

Sincerely,
Mitch

here at the University of Michigan I have no problems. I tend to carry and use both my BM710 and my Random Task with no problem from people. I've even whipped out one of my bali songs for use on a lighting hang, with not so much as a flinch from people.
Lighten up. If you're smart about things, you should be fine.
Piece of advice, though. If you're going to a party and planning on drinking underage, might be wise to leave the knife at home.

i didn't realize so many on bladeforums were in college! i am at BYU, so i thought i'd share my experience. i carry three knives on me everyday, two in the waistband and one in my front pocket. i have carried everything from a BM 710 to a spyderco baby wayne goddard and everything in between. i don't show them off and the one in the pocket will normally be 3" or under. i checked with the university and the apartment complex. neither really encourage, but do allow. i have an on-campus job and have used my spyderco harpy many times without people flipping out. open it reasonably slow, use it and put it away. don't make a show.

as an aside most people find my knives intriging. they like to pick my brain about stuff and test my knowledge all the time.

the only problem with knives in college is that i don't have as much money to buy the ones i want!

good luck with applications, it can be a bear.

i carry a BM 710, spyde harpy and a delica minimun on me every day. delica is for utility. others are for social work.

use the little cute delica for "stuff" and noone will say anything. if someone mentiones weapon act shocked. "weapon!??! what do you mean, its a pocket knife! where do you get weapon from? man you are dangerous, i dont think i want to hang around you...."

that is what i do. or get a few for social work and a SAK or leatherman. noone says anything about a red swiss army knife. just dont go flicking the axis in class to show off to the other freshmen. that is a no no.
i learned the hard way.

I go to CMU which is a block away from UPitt. I have played with my balisong over here in CMu no problem but some of the people around me give me a weird look. Ofcourse I do not really look threatiening. I am SURE that in the handbooks there is a rule against possession of a concealed weapon and no they do not go into the detail of length - just a straight NO. Basically just use yor common sense when handling a knife. If you treat it like a weapon people will oook at it like a weapon. if you use it as a tool you will be treated as cuh.. then again.. well nevermind =p

UPitt however my friend, would be a GOOD place to have a knife with you.. especially at night ^_^;; but damn for the fries and hoagies they have at the 'O' I wouldn't mind bring a knife with me to eat there =p.

and chizpuf is RIGHT ON THE MONEY. if you plan to go to a frat party to drink and plan to get wasted LEAVE your knife at home. (i know I don't but it's up to you - you dont need 2 sitations).. and yes you will do it it's part of the college experience. Good luck sir!!

generallobster...

Really?! When I studied at UC Berkeley I used to get tons of flak over knife collecting and anything that might be construed as pro-weapon. Maybe it was just the crowd I hung around. Many seemed really sheltered.

berkley is a very STRANGE school political activist (am i using the right terms) is an understatement.. I have been on their campus and it seems like you need a knife from all the weirdos there... sigh sadly that was my first choice. =(

btw this comment is all meant in good humour and not meant to start a flame war - it really was my first choice.. it is a radical campus in every sense of the word.

Here at Reed (Portland, OR) it's no problem at all, the campus police have seen me pulling out my Axis (full-size) and Stryker for cutting gaffer's tape and the like (pro-sound). No one seems to worry, and as long as I don't pull it on someone I think I'm fine. If you're worried, though, I'd carry a multitool as well--people seem to be much more accepting of them for general use (although it takes *so* much longer to, say, open a package).
Look around when you get on campus, but you should be fine. Just don't be stupid about it...

A Reedie in our midst!

I generally act under the assumption that LC's administration would be only too happy to throw me out with little or no provocation, so the only knife that profs or other students ever get to see is my mangled SAK.

May be just as well, concealing a fixed blade is probably illegal in this state anyway...

I go to the University of Lethbridge (Alberta, Canada) and I carry my AFCK daily. Only one person has even bothered to inquire about the clip hanging out of my pocket!! ONE PERSON!!! I see my knife as an indespensable tool and almost forget that it is even there; consequently, I don't think anyone will really notice your knife unless you wave it around (You already heard this part!) Might be a good idea to check with the rules though... maybe call from a pay phone and give a fake name, or write a letter but use a different name. They will reply but they won't know it is you.

Felex,
I haven't had any problems with people reacting negatively to my knives at Berkeley. I talked to a police officer for an hour when the bomb squad came to show off their equipment. I caught him eyeing my pocket clip, and his partner did as well, but I just kept asking questions about shrapnel and kevlar. Friends think it is odd that I like knives, but they know I like G-shock watches and big tools as well, so the knives just fit me in their minds, I guess. I built a seven foot potato cannon in an art class this semester, and I fired it into my physics book. I was wondering if that was going too far, but nobody was upset or put off by it, I think.

I'm in med school. I carry a large CRK Sebenza in the pocket and a MAD DOG Pygmy ATAK on my belt daily in the hospital and on campus. I usually wear something light covering my tools but sometimes I carry openly. I get looks but who cares.

Tim

Knives are almost always against the formal rules; but, generally, the campus police aren't looking to give you grief about the thing so long as you're discreet.
