I am taking a trip to Germany for about a week. Can someone please let me know what is legal and what is not. Do I take my Beachmade 42, Delica, or just a slip Swiss Army? I might also look to pick up something there and bring it back. Any recommendations?

Thanks,

Philip

Hey Philip,

I can help you out with that.

Regarding knives, everything is legal except:

- all pushdaggers, butterflies and automatic knives that come out of the front
- automatic knives that open to the side and are longer than 8.5cm
- any double-edged automatic knives
- any automatic knives with blades which breadth is less than 20% of the knife's length
- automatic knives which do not have a continuous back that tapers towards the point

I know the last two points sound somewhat weird and in all honesty I don't know where those rules historically originate from, but it's the law.

So basically no pushdaggers and butterflies and no automatic knives > 8.5cm and you are fine. Also note that any daggers are considered "weapons", which means you are not allowed to carry them on public events and such. On the funny side it would be perfectly legal to run around with a claymore bi-handed sword on your back. Just don't expect to really get away with it. :)

Just stick to any manual knife and you are fine in Germany. Guess we are still on the liberal end of the knife-spectrum here.

You are not :), here in Czech republic we don't have any regulations concerning knives :p - from our point of view it is awfully restricted over there :D

(BTW on topic - I heard that pepper sprays are considered as weapons (especially when crossing the borders it may be a problem) as well)

Well, liberal compared to some american states. :-p
Pepper spray is legal in Germany when you are 18 or older.

Be careful with pepperspray: As far as I understand it as a legal layman, it is illegal for use against humans. So if ever asked, state that you are afraid of dogs... You can of course use it in a self defense situation. It's just that you are not allowed to carry it for that purpose - go figure.

Also a word of advise on knives: There are a lot of sheeple here. Make sure not to flick them in public - that might draw unwanted attention. I always carry a sheeple friendly knife - SAK, Leatherman, Calypso or so - which I use when I want to open something in a public place. But maybe I'm paranoid.

Are you sure that the 8,5 cm blade counts only for automatics, and not for all folders? Somewhere on the internet I red that all non fixed blades with a blade over 8,5 cm is illegal to carry.
But how I understand it now it's legal to carry my ColdSteel Vaquero extra large, for example. Right?
