Greetings all,

I have a question I need help with.
I am due to head out pretty soon and am trying to decide if I want to take my Project 1 or if I should pick up the Green Beret for the trip. As it is I am told we cannot wear it on our gear(how gay is that), so I will wear it on my belt underneath. I don't mind the weight, I am 6'2" 250+ lbs and I wear my LBE fairly loose.
What I want to know is which of the two, in your considered opinions, would hold up best for the duration?
Please let me know what you all think.
Thank you all in advance.

Welcome to the forums.

Either knife will serve you well. The Project one has been around for a long time and is a proven field knife, and the Green Beret if anything is stronger. It really comes down to how comfortable they feel in your hand. If I am going to be out in 100+ degree weather I am not sure I would want to handle an all metal grip. Then again if you plan to wear it under a jacket it would be no warmer then anything else.

Good Luck, and best wishes for a safe return.

Ok, two votes for the Green Beret.

n2s,
I am curious why you say the GB would be stronger than the P1. I thought carbon steel was 'tougher'.

Please keep the info flowing.

The full tang usually means a stronger knife; since the tang is just a continuation of the blade. The project I is milled from a single bar so the difference is probably insignificant. I am not very big on the stainless versus carbon steel debate. It is much more important to get the geometry and heat treatment done right then whether the blade is made from carbon or stainless steel. I am sure CRK has done it right and S30V is a very good alloy.

I would say which ever can be carried inverted safest. I'm in the Air Force and have had to put up with the stupid no knives on LBE rule for a long time. I have carried on my belt and it can very hard to get to the knife. Inverted carry would enable you to get to the knife much easier. All that said your best bet would most likely be a Large Sebenza, get a nice nylon sheath, and you should be able to hide it in plain site on your web gear. Having a bigger blade would be nice but you may end up not carrying anything due to the inconvienance. The Sebbie has a rock solid lock-up that rivals a fixed blade. Also you might want to consider a custom kydex sheath for either fixed blade. Take a look at TOPS knives website. They have some awesome kydex sheaths that rotate 360 degrees and can give you a good idea what can be done.

Ps good luck and take care, and know you will be in everyone's thoughts and prayers

I strongly suggest the Green Beret Knife.

The handle has the "texture" that you will need in a situation where the adrenalin will be flowing- it is larger and just "feels" more tactical.

If it does get wet, then the Canvas Micarta handle on the Green Beret Knife will absorb sweat and moisture to a degree- the Project 1 will get slippery.

The blade shape on the Green Beret is designed for COMBAT- the CPM S30V Stainless Steel will require less maintenance.

Finally- the Sheath. There is no contest here. The heavy duty Canvas carry system from Black Hawk Industries was designed with the active fighting man/woman in mind. Fully adjustable and lots of pockets for essentials.

Take care and thanks for doing your part to keep freedom alive.

Hello,

This situation brings up a topic that was kicked around a few years back.
In one of the above replys they mentioned that the sebenza has a lockup that is very comparable to the one piece designs in strength and solidity.

But the main shortcoming is the smaller blade length. Years ago it was suggested that CRK build an exact fascimile of the sebenza only 15 to 20% larger. I think this situation is exactly where this knife would be warranted and needed for duty. :D

Something of this nature could still be carried in a sheath and yet have a much increased blade length........with the massive lock up strength increased right along with the size.

I know it does not do anyone any good if they do not have it avalible now. So therefore my support would go for the Green Beret.;)

I also would go with the GB knife. The sheath reminds me of those by Eagle industies.

As an aside I also rate the D2 steel Ka Bar with the Eagle sheath. Its no GB knife, but at half the price might be ok if you may losse the knife in combat?

I have a GB and have handled the Project I. They have basically the same blade geometry. The main difference is in the handle design. Both are textured and I can't imagine the Project I beins slippery when wet -- the knurled surface would prevent slipping. The GB has a textured micarta handle that also should prevent slipping when wet, besides it ergonomic, hand filling shape. It comes down to preference. Both would do a great job.

Well I picked up the GB. I like it alot but am still torn between which one to take. It is hard to tell which would be better.
I agree about the grip and I don't see it as a problem.
Now, do I take one or both....;)

Why in the wisdom of military thinking is a knife not allowed on the LBE? Are the powers that be concerned it might be to handy?

By the way, I agree the grip of the One-Piece line should not present a problem regarding slickness when wet. I have had mine covered with fish guts, rain and sweat. Never had a problem with grip.

Political Correctness, and Uniformity? Who knows what runs threw a commanders mind when he makes such decisions. The troops just have to comply.
