After considerable experimentation, I have found that knives with a 3.5" blade are the best for my uses. (Note, this is excluding most of the traditional patterns I carry, they're I'm fine with smaller knives. Same deal with SAKs, although I dig the big ones).

I only own two knives in this blade length- a Benchmade Vex and a Buck Mayo Hilo. I like both, and carry and use both, reguarly.

However, I want more knives, in different styles and preferably better blade styles, in this size range.

This Moore Maker Roper's knife has had my eye for a while now. Yellow delrin and carbon-- doesn't get any better than this.

It looks like the blade is about in my "ideal" blade size.

Another one is a Kershaw. I can't think of the name, but it is a framlock and avaliable at WalMart for $30. It, again is in my "ideal" blade size, although it is partial serrated.

The Benchmade Ambush is in this size range, as in one of the Pikas. There is also a Byrd liner-lock that I am thinking about getting, but I generally don't care for thumb holes.

I also think there is a Ken Onion designed Kershaw AO in this size range. It may be the Shallot.

This size range is also true for fixed blades, but I'm not really aware of any this size, except for some Moras and paring knives.

So- what knives in the 3.5-4" blade range are there, that are under $50, if at all possible, and of good quality?

I think you are talking about the Kershaw Vapor. It is a nice framelock for the money. How about a Blade-Tech Pro Hunter Lite, Kershaw Lahar, Cold Steel Voyager, Kershaw JYD II, or Boker M Type. Those are all nice folders for the money. Good Luck! Kevin

No, I don't think it was the Vapor. It might be the Storm.

Mcusta Katana and Stingray series (and the cheap Browning Ice Storm clone) have 3.25" blades, pretty close to your desired spec, and these are splendid knives...

The storm, the blur, the jyd 1 and 2, the ener-g 2, the lahar. all kershaw, all great knives. the lahar is the top of the heap in terms of fit&finish and blade steel (vg-10). all can be had at around $50 give or take. there are at least 5-10 more from kershaw alone.

Take a look at the Blade Tech Pro Hunter Lite. This is the knife I keep going back to for work and it has been a real stand up and get it done folder.

I agree with a 3.5" blade being about perfect for what I look for in a folder. Sometimes 3" blades are a little small and 4" blades can be clumsy for some fine tasks. I like the in between blade size.
