knives in South Africa?

Hello,
my brother in law´s girlfriend will go to South Africa in late summer to work there for some time with some wildlife preservation companies (she will start to study to be a veterinarian after that). My brother in law mentioned that she does not own a knife and as she leaves soon, we want to give her a SAK "Outrider" (basically the "Rucksack"-model but with scissors and phillips-screwdriver. The blade can be fixed and as I know this knife would be illegal in some countries (UK) because of this I wanted to ask if there are similar rules in South Africa (I do not think - but want to be sure...)

Brendan? Johan? or anyone who knows?

I think I would find out what type of security the company she is going to work for will provide. Do they provide armed guards? Private contractors? Who and what is their track record? What does the US State Dept say about the area?

If proper security is not provided, I tend to agree with Danny. Don't go.

Danny is dead on with this. Rape has just about become the National pass time there. You can get a car with a flame thrower security option there for god's sake.

South Africa is awesome !!

As far as knives go - you can have pretty much anything there and most everything is legal to carry.


There is rape everywhere fellas but things are getting alot better.
