What kind of quality are knives made from files? What steel are they? There is a maker here that makes some great looking knives from files and I am just wondering how they perform. Thanks!

I feel the quality can be as good as the time and expertise put into making it. Here is a recent Don Hanson file blade. Not the norm for Don, but he brought an old file to life with this bad bowie for the St. Louis show earlier this year. Almost a 1/4-inch thick, 1 3/4-inches wide, 12 1/2-inches long and 18-inches overall, this one is begging to be used. The steel is probably W1 or W2. Definitely high carbon with low alloy. Fine grained steel, quenched three times, finished down thin and sharp as can be. We cut cigarette paper with it at the show, and it proved to be the sharpest knife on Don's table that day.
No performance test on this one yet, but I'm betting it is up to most task I would want to use it for.

that's cool man.

Files make nice "sharp" knives. I use Nicholson mostly.

Here are a couple.................. Robert

Hey, I've got that second file knife Robert posted right here in my hand. It's as sharp as anything in my collection.
