OK, a knife maker in Afghanistan made a knife for me using thick 1/4" thick rocket steel (shank), brass and camel bone (handle), and camel hide for a shealth. Nice looking and large. He puts the year, location, and his business name on it. He also sometimes uses rosewood whick also looks nice. The camel shealth is NOT functional, but the knives look to be.

How hard do you think the metal is? 1095ish? I understand this is a WAQ (wild A?? quess).

Thanks

Rc high 40's or low 50's. They want toughness not hardness in the rocket shell. A possible fracture would not be a good thing for a rocket.

I'm trying to think of what part of a rocket would be made of 1/4" thick steel.

I will ask him better questions next time. He keeps saying Rockets, but he is a knife maker not an artillery officer. I know shops purchase steel and brass from kids who hang out at ranges and after battles pick up left overs to sell in kabul where most items seem to be made. He seems to be good at fixed blade knife styles. Show him a picture and he will do it. I have seen the French and Spanish Army soldiers drop off designs to be made. He stamps deep into the blade the date and names into the steel not cheap engraving. This tells me it might be soft or he has some shop nice tools. I have his business card, but would love to see his operation in Kabul.

You better search for old Damascus or Wootz-Pulad blades there.

Thanks, Vassili.

I saw on TV of a knife maker from taiwan who forges his blades out of spent artillary shells.

He was making mostly kitchen butcher knives. They looked very well made, but I really doubt the steel is any good.
Who knows, maybe it is.

I was wondering the same thing.

All the rockets I have ever been close to were made of some type of thin stock sheet metal.

As mentioned above he must be using shell housings/casings/walls.

He could also be using shrapnel that is lying around, and it is no telling where that might be coming from. I-beams in buildings, track, vehicle frame...........

Pics are definitely in order.

BTW, what is he getting for these fine works of art?

Thanks.
