I am looking to buy a Knives of Alaska Alpha Wolf for field dressing whitetail deer and doing some smaller jobs on moose and black bear. I am trying to decide which steel would be better for me to get D2 or S30V. I am by no means a pro at sharpening my knives and I would have to actually buy a sharpener as I only have the cheap $5 ones right now. I am looking for a steel that holds a great edge and doesn't need to be sharpened after every deer. When it does need to be sharpened it should be easy enough to get a great edge back and hold it for a while. I am very good at cleaning and oiling my knives so they won't rust. I have no problem at all paying the extra $25 on the S30-V if its the right steel for me. What steel should I pick and why? Thanks

I bought the KOA Magnum Boar hunter in D2 over a year ago. I have used it for skinning and boning out a hog and general camp chores and it is still as sharp as the day it arrived. I'm a little underwhelmed with the whole handle design - it looks and feels a little cheesy. Looks are deceiving. But the Suregrip handle is very grippy in "wet" conditions and the overall knife quality is high. I'm not a fan of S30V, but am with D2. KOA's S30V might be great, I don't know. Their D2 is good. I can touch up the knife with a kitchen steel and it gets back on edge. You will be able to take it out of the box, field dress whatever critter you like, and not have to resharpen it during the process. That knife is a perfect deer knife. Would make a good caper/boning knife for larger game, too. I would go with the G-10 if you are willing to spend the extra $.
