Knives of Alaska Bush camp D2 vs. Cold Steel Master Hunter SAN MAI III

I will primarily be using it for hiking, canoe camping, camping, general survival use and Minor Bush Craft.

I dont want a knife that looks tactical, simply because I don't want to look dangerous to other campers.

Environment - I Live in Southern Ontario, Temperatures range from - 40 c (-40 f) to 35 c (95 f)

What I Like - More blade on the Alaskan, better grip, very ergonomic, Aesthetically pleasing. cold Steel Master Hunter is Light weight, Nice Sheath, It is also smaller and more concealable. Cold Steel seems to have a great reputation.

What I Dislike - Alaskan; the sheath is leather. Alaskan Knives are not as well known.

I have heard that the D2 can be brittle but pretty sure the heat treatment should cover it and it is thinker then the CS.

Any thoughts on the metals would be greatly appreciated.

This will be my first fixed blade so any input on the them or other recommendations for a 10 inch fixed blade int he 100 dollar area would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the help!!

Get the Knives of Alaska Bush camp D2, way more knife for th money!! The D2 is solid. CS is soooo ugly

Fallkniven S1 or the Cold Steel Master Hunter are ideal, along with a Hatchet for wood chores.

Not a fan of Kbar, Not as ergonomic as the alaska knife. But thank you for the recommendations. Has anyone tested the Alaskan Knife bush Camp knife d2?

I would go with the CS Master Hunter, it's a very solid knife. :)

I have had one since they first came out in Carbon V. Same knife for over 20 years. Anyways I love it. That's it. keepem sharp

carbon V was a proprietary steel/heat treat protocol made by camillus for cold steel - they had to switch when camillus closed their doors.
the master hunter is a fine knife.

Knives of Alaska are not as well known as CS, but they make an excellent product and their D2 has a good heat treat & edge geometry as well.

in all honesty, go with the one that feels best in your hand, either one should perform well for you.

Thank you everyone for your comments.

I ended up purchasing the Alaska knife Bush Camper for $99 CDN.

I think it was a great decision and I ended up taking the knife out that day on a hike, cut through wood with relative ease. What was most impressive was that the edge is still solid, I don't have to sharpen it quite yet. One thing that bothers me is the Sheath, but the metal is impressive. The handle of the knife is beautiful, you can choke up on it on different levels and have a firm grip on the knife for different applications. I recommend this knife to anyone great dollar for knife ratio.
