I’m in the market for a secondary blade to complement my Esee 3hm for use on deer and elk. I handled a Knives of Alaska Elk hunter and was very impressed with the ergonomics and how thin and slicey the blade looked.

How good a job do they do with D2? How does it compare to Benchmade’s D2 as far as edge retention and ease of sharpening?

Not sure if it helps, but I have a KOA alpha wolf in s30v. It's been great. I've gone through 2 deer and still had a working edge.
Now I usually touch it up and strop it after each deer.
I really like the ergos, handle material, etc.

Saw that one as well. Not sure the elk hunter is offered in S30V, but D2 is OK by me as well.

Anyone have experience with KOA and their D2??

D2 isn't my favorite steel ... just to preface this ...

but I have used a KOA caper in D2 for several years ... I have never had a Benchmade in D2 ... but I have no compliants with KOA's caper in D2 ...

I have also used their Alpha Wolf in S30V and Jager Knife in ATS34 ... both nice knives.

I bought a White River in S35VN recently to replace it for a caping knife ... but that's personal preference for me.

I used a Knives of Alaska one trip up there. It worked fine. Gave it to a friend who liked it. I expect he's still using it, but it never comes up in our conversations.

With all the preparations, hassle and hard work the last thing I want to worry about is my knife rusting. And something that field sharpens easier is nice.
