I have the Knives of Alaska Boar Hunter and Trail knife Combo, and Bush camp Combo. I love them. The D2 Is Great and the Grip is great. Really good Camp.trail knives. Now they come out with this Military/Fighter Style knife. It's actually Very Beautiful. One has Tan Micarta and the other CF. Does anyone have one of these? if you look closely at the Nylon "Tactical" sheath, it looks like there's a Kydex insert that's not just an insert to protect the nylon. It looks like a regular molded kydex sheath that could be taken out and drill 2 holes and slap a tec loc on there or IWB it. Anyonw know about the sheath? I know the have the all kydes sheath, but that one looks like a crappy Kbar type. the insert in the nylon sheath looks like a Molded sheath. Anyone have this? It reminds me of a Simonech or the old camillus in a way. Looks very nice.

Thanks for the link. If i was looking for a hard use camp and trail knife, I'd pass. S30V is nice steel, but in this class it's overkill. A 1095 carbon steel would be more easily field sharpened. The "full tang" really isn't with the storage cutouts, which are thinnest right where you put the most pressure, under the index finger. Access to those little pockets also opens up losing the screws in the bush - and if you can take it apart with a hex, they can come apart on their own, Mr. Murphy can guarantee it eventually.

Knives of Alaska makes good hunting knives, but followed a couple of tactical style features that actually don't help. A sabre grind on the blade is actually a cheap production technique - they do flat grind all the time, but macho buyers want looks, not efficiency. A lanyard thong hole would be preferable to the huge pommel, which is too thin to hammer with. Carbon fiber grips are nice, and match the expense of S30V - and may be necessary to reinforce the tang, from the looks of it.

Molded inserts are nice, and a practical way to make a sheath "jump rated" for airborne use. In practice the honed edge of the blade needs to be held away from the interior, or it abrades and blunts from casual carry, especially from a loose fit. Check them closely for cut marks and dull spots to ensure you are getting a properly designed sheath.

There's just enough clues in the styling to make the impression that the makers are hoping closet Rambos will make it a success - which is who will buy it. Pro's shy away from these simply because simpler knives from standard materials do as well.

I Know it has a Sabre grind and all that. But it feels kind of like a Simonech or the old Camillus CQB-1 in a weird way. Nobody is making knives like that anymore. This is the first knife like that I've seen from a production company in a few years. It really does have the balance it says in the ad. I just wish it was FULL Flat Ground and D2 like the others they Make. Or like you said, Carbon steel. D2 or Carbon with flat grind and a simple molded kydex sheath

Even though I'm with tirod on simple steels and simple designs for woods knives. I don't think this particular knife is bad. If for any reason it floats your boat, buy it. I don't think the cutouts would be anything to worry about, there is still plenty of steel in that handle. I would however buy the g10 handled one made with D2 and save some cash! I'd say you could get one of the guys that does Kydex sheaths on the forums to make you a sheath or $25 to $30.

Check out this link for the D2/G10 version:

Xtreme Defense Survival S30V Tan/Kydex I have been hoping to find a good youtube review on this knife as yet I havn't found one. I did find a foreign language review that was little help. I contacted KOA asking for a blem I could do a hard use review on. I would just hate to pay full price and it breaks during battoning or something. Sputnic's point about the S30V being a bit much for this knife but who can't carry a small diamond stone if you are planning on being out for a week or longer. It isn't likely to need sharpening on a 2 or 3 day outing. Sharpening can be achieved on a piece of glass I would think. The hole nearest the blade holding the scales on seems large for that point it could be weak there. Only hard use would prove that out. I was really hot to get this one but not the one with the holes in the handle. A hard review is in order though.
