Six weeks ago I went on a seven day trip down the Rio Grande through the Lower Canyons just outside Big Bend National Park in Southwest Texas. The trip was run by an outfit called SUNRISE EXPEDITIONS ( they run trips on wild and senic rivers all over the world...Iceland, Scotland...even Mongolia !). The guides are are as nice as pie and are real characters. Although its not quite in the Randall Adventure Training league by any stretch....we all were required to bring along a stout knife. I brought along my Spyderco Military folder and a Holiday gift....a new ENTREK 4" "Companion".....440C, semi-spear point configuration, wide belly, THICK but sharp when touched up, black/gray micarta scales...the knife comes with a cheesy looking kydex/plastic sheath .....but it held the knife securely to my side depite all my slips and falls into the Rio Grande. ( FILTHY water.....Oh, Lord!). However the sheath does not have any drain holes and when I returned from Texas I noticed rust on the blade. The Spydie Military was fine ...it was all I really needed on the trip.....the only time I think I used a knife was to cut some rope, a steak, and remove the last pickle from the bottom of the jar ! Despite my attempts to put myself in places where I will be "back to basics" and depend on THE KNIFE as a primary, essential tool....I fail miserably! Still, I had fun.... and like both these knives.
