Graymaker, call the airline and ask about taking them along as checked baggage. Above all, Make sure whatever bag or container the knives are in cannot be opened by having the lock picked. The airline recommended gun boxes have cheap locks that theives pick very easily and then they re-lock your shipping container. While I worked for Britt Airways my brother had a gun stolen out of his properly checked through airline recommended aluminum gun box. It had cheap key locks and airline bag personell in Chicago(ORD) stole a pistol out of the box and relocked it. The Airline of course inspected the box and contents when he checked in at LAX but did not use a seal in the box.I picked him up at our local airport and brought him to my home, and when he opened his box he discovered the pistol missing. We then called my boss at work, returned to my workplace, and filled out the insurance papers. My brother was quickly paid for the pistol. By coincidence,my manager made a remark some dude was right now probably robbing a drugstore with the gun, a target .22 with an Aimpiont attatched to it. Not long after,Chicago police recovered the pistol in an aborted drug store robbery! My brother contacted the airline when Chicago returned the pistol to him. The Airline told him to just keep the money for the inconvience he received. Shortly after the theft a theft ring of baggage handlers at ORD was busted. He has since had a custom made heavy duty box built that cannot be picked.
