Knives & spider webs don't mix

I was walking around in the backyard about an hour ago when I decided to remove my practically brand-spanking-new Mini-Grip out of my pocket. The thing caught on something on the way out of my pocket, so I put it back in and removed it again and couldn't figure out what it had caught on the first time, still walking around. I'd started opening it when I realized I'd just almost walked into a spider web (there are too many of those out there this time of year, blech) and stepped back and went "Eww!"

Somehow, while I was busy being grossed out (mind you, I'm not afraid of spiders, I just don't like walking into webs), I managed to switch the half-opened knife from my right hand to my left and felt the blade bite me on my left middle finger. I closed the knife & put it back in my pocket and checked my finger for damage. I squeezed it and didn't see blood, so I figured the knife hadn't bitten me as badly as I thought. Walking, walking, walking, when I felt something wet on my fingers. I looked at my hand again to see that finger was bleeding rather nicely.

It's not a bad cut, fortunately. I put a bandage on it and it doesn't even hurt. I guess I need to be more careful when I'm walking around my own backyard. Must ban spiders. They're dangerous.

I'm kidding. I actually have a pretty good opinion of spiders when they're not making me cut myself. ;)

Moondrop,
FYI a piezo electric shock to a spider bite breaks down a protein in the spider toxin and is now a recommeded treatment for spider bites. A flexible fabric bandaid is my choice for a knife bite...Take Care...ED

actually, spiderweb is a great helper in the blood coagulation process.

just a thought.

Hope your cut heals up OK.

No dangerous spiders where I live, and I try not to kill them if I can avoid it. But if you see any this size, better put away the MiniGrip and start carrying a claymore...:D

Much as i love knives i think I'd opt for a 12 gauge. :D

I've had some close calls with Black Widows at night, so I think more now about what I'm doing. Those suckers are evil looking and can put a serious hurt on you.

Maybe you should have been carying a Spyderco around those webs.

*buh-dum chink*

Thank you, I'm here all week!

The web in question seems to be some kind of spider condo. I'm used to seeing those one-layer webs with one spider in the middle. The one I almost walked into has several layers and at least four sides, with several spiders of the same type living in it. Black spiders with some fluorescent markings. Don't know what kind they are. I tend to just stay away from most spiders when I can't identify them.

Haven't seen a brown recluse in person yet, hope to never see or be bitten by one. :)

There are peach trees in my yard and strung up between two of them is a large web that is the home of what I believe is called a crab-like spiny orb weaver or something like that. It's been a while since I looked it up. Those give me the creeps just looking at them. It's fascinating to see it just do a bungee-jumping type drop out of the web if I get too close, though.

The critter I've had the most trouble with, aside from skeeters, is the fire ant. Mounds all over this area and those things are merciless. I went to the store a couple of weeks ago, wearing sandals, and when I got back I was bitten by one of those nasty little buggers in my driveway. This is not a place where you can safely walk barefoot in the grass. :(

As for that spider in the picture up there, when is someone gonna finally invent a working laser/phaser gun like they've had in sci-fi movies for so long? :)

A spider that size would be to quick for you and a 12 guage (Depending on the species). A wolf aka jumping spider that size would be able to jump 20 yds at a time and move at 40 mph and not consider itself running.

I'd probably use the gun on myslf at just the thought of one of those coming after me. That would be to much......

How about an M249 SAW if you are running around...or if you are lets say stationary on a rooftop or something, how about a Mk40 automatic 40mm grenade launcher :-D
