Recently there was a massive collection of beautiful custom knives stolen from RDU Airport a little over a week ago. Here is a link with images to all the knives stolen: http://www.knifepurveyor.com/browse/stolen.aspx

Apparently, all of the knives were already sold, and were waiting to be shipped to their new owners when the briefcase containing all of the knives was stolen. Many of these are one-offs and irreplaceable. Michael, the previous owner of all of these knives, is asking that you contact him if any of these knives are seen for sale.

They haven't really said. The flight was canceled or delayed so the case was just sitting there and sometime walked up and took it.

If I had that much in blades in one case I'd at least have a tracking chip on it or someone guard it.

This really sucks, but...I'm having a hard time comprehending the notion of checking a bag with $750K worth of anything in it. The article says the crook walked out of the "baggage area" with the case. Is that the secure area, accessible only to employees - or baggage claim? If the latter, how does that happen?

That's just horrible. I truly hope the thief has a change of heart, and turns them in.

That really stings. I had a collection of Press Buttons, Flylocks, Prestos and slip joints stolen from the National Knife Collectors Museum. An inside job? I think so.
I bet someone was watching that bag all the time.

This has to be the worst possible outcome, sure hope justice will be served.

I remember when this happened to Ken Onion a couple years back, i think that's who it was. Major suckage. :(

Unless you're landing from an international flight the luggage carousels are not in a secure area. Not at airports I've seen anyway. Anybody from off the street can walk into the baggage claim area, pick up random luggage off the carousel, and walk out the door with it.

There was a story in the news about people in Arizona who made a career of stealing luggage from the airport to stock their perpetual garage sale. They'd pull up to the passenger pickup curb with a cargo trailer, fill it was random luggage from the carousels, and drive off. Phoenix or Tucson, I don't recall. They were eventually caught, but not until after stealing over a thousand bags.

As frequently as airport thievery occurs, I also can't believe anyone would check luggage with valuables inside. May as well leave $700,000 in a paper bag at the laundromat.

Still, no one deserves to be the victim of theft, and hope the thieves get what they have coming.

I guess that was my point. If the case was checked - I don't get why anyone would do that. If it wasn't, why was it out of his sight, even for a second? If it had $750K cash in it, it would have never been out of my hands.

I'm curious too. If it was a departing flight, the luggage would have been checked at the ticket counter and gone on to baggage handling in a secure behind-the-scenes location, where valuables are stolen by baggage handlers and TSA agents.
If it's an arriving flight, passengers almost always get to the carousels before the luggage.

There are probably many alternative possibilities though. If the passenger had gone on a different flight than their luggage, for example.

Well we know the case could not be carried on with knives in it, so it had to be checked. I won't even put a pair of expensive cuff links in a checked bag these days because you cannot lock checked bags and it is no secret that TSA and airport employees sometimes steal things out of bags. Also, the airlines limit their liability for lost/stolen bags to a ridiculously low amount. Why would anyone put $750,000 worth of knives or anything else in a checked bag?

If I had that much money in knives in one case, I would have checked a firearm in there.

Remember that bags are sometimes x-rayed behind the scenes. It's pretty conceivable that the bag was scanned and immediately recognized as containing a lot of valuables.

I believe bonded, insured air freight would have been cheaper than having them stolen. Wow.

Holy CRAP! With 3/4 of a mil in knives, it might have been wiser to charter a plane. I wouldn't have let them out of my sight.
