I was just wondering what knifemakers have made a knife specifically for themselves? I've never made myself one or even kept one of my knives for my use. If you have made yourself a knife, how bout posting a picture for us and a short story why you chose that particular pattern and materials?

AWESOME post Mike!!!! I was wondering the same thing too! And, I was wondering if ANY knifemaker ever makes themselves a knife!! So far I have made 4 and although the forst one I am keeping, I am not going to sharpen and I am just keeping it because it is my first. So, 3 are for other people and I have 4 to make for others before I get to make myself one. But then I definitely will be making myself two (thanks to your help!)
But, as of yet, I have not really made myself one

I have made a few, but not necessarily for myself yet. The santoku project is on hold till I make some money by selling blades, so I will be selling a bunch around new years! Hint hint..save that christmas money!

I have a few 3" 7" oal approx blades of O-1, 2 4", 8" oal 1095 blades and 2 5" blade 9" oal of 1095, one 4.5" camp knife of O-1, and I will be making a chisel point, flat ground tanto for someone and a 7" bowie, maybe for me, maybe for sale. I want to make myself a stockman, but I am not that good yet!

I find that sort of an odd question. I make every knife as if it were to be my own.
Every time I make what I belive is an advance in materials or heat treatment, I carry the first one for several months, testing day to day, until I'm satisfied it's going to work, then I institute the change into my methods.
I make myself a new hunting knife every year, and use the season as a test bed. If it pans out like I expect, it goes up for sale after hunting season is over. Over the last several years, my hunting knife has been the first thing off the table at the OKCA show in April.
Last year I carried one of my little EBKs, and went through several animals, then put them out to the public.

I really want to make one for myself, and will possibly do so this year. It is a new camp/fighter, and like ED i want to give it a season before i start making them (at least thats another good reason to keep it a while).

in fact, that's why I got into this business / hobby. To make a knife that I could use with a quality and durability far above those I could afford to buy. I liked the results so much that I wanted to make more. The business part was a necessity to perpetuate the hobby. I suppose that's the snare we fall into. The first part of the Love Affair.

Like Ed, I like to try each change in materials to be certain of what I'm making / selling.

I have saved a few knives for my little boy's collection.
I have always just wanted to take a few weeks off and build a wild knife for him.

I carry a few different knives that are Not for sale.

L-6, I know two makers that make a small knife to carry , when someone asks, "what kind of knives do you make?" he pulls the knife out and hands it over.
One maker makes a new one every year and retires the knife after one year, and makes another. The other maker sells the "sample" when he feels like it.
Of course if you are building swords this may be difficult.

I am in the process of making one for myself right now. A Bowie. Not too big but it will have all the bells and whistles on it. One more for myself is also in the works a butt ugly utility knife ground all the way to 60 grit, Micarta handles and moulded leather pouch sheath. I gaurentee that one will be a user.

I am making knives in my spare time since five years (self taught, forging all blades) and have made around 200 until now. Every now and then i keep a knife for me if there is a visible big step foreward towards better workmanship and/or quality. So i have got a whole bunch of knives as a reference of my own personal developement and for personal use, too.

I'm getting started in knifemaking with the main intention of making the ideal knife for myself. I have several designs that I believe are what I want to carry. After I am happy with my results, I'm sure I'll make some extras to sell or trade.

Unless I know from the beginning that the knife is for someone else, I have a hard time letting them go, so you could say that most of my knifes are for me

I've made three especially for me - a 6 inch hunter, a large bowie as a camp knife and a 6 inch fighter.

Tom, the idea of you wheeling around with a 3V re curve machete strapped to your handle bars is quite the picture.
