Just picked up this knife at my local Military Surplus Store. It's a Fury "Comorant", picked it up for $6. Yes I know it's a cheap knife, yes I have carried a Sebenza and know what real quality is, but for a box opener ... which it is being given as gift to do just this... this ain't a bad knife. Little locktite on the screws is needed though.

You'll find that you won't be able to sharpen those things.
I've seen them in a local knife store and they don't really have an edge on it when it's out of the box and they probably won't hold an edge if you try. But then I didn't see this model in the knife store. The store has like at least 2 models from the same company.

The 2 best things about carrying a cheap knife, if someone asks to borrow your knife and they are blatant abusers of knives, ie... prying, using it as a screwdriver, you can give them the cheap one to use, also if they lose it or you do who cares?:D

...Cool-looking knife, but I'd bet that I can bite the blade in-half!.:D.

Interesting little pocket knife for $6, but I'd feel guilty if I gave that knife to someone and then hear about the blade closing up on their fingers because the lock failed. I'd rather spend $4 extra and give someone a Frosts Mora as a gift. Laminated steel and no folding parts. ;)

I had a Fury Liner Lock that I got before I bought any high quality knives. It had a semi-sharp chisel ground tanto blade. After about two weeks, the lock began moving all the way over to the other liner. It didn't have a stop pin either so it began to dent the handle. A little after that it came apart. I bought it for something like $20. Kinda funny when I just went to Walmart yesterday and got a Kershaw Vapor for the same price...

BTW: That one looks a LOT cooler than the one I had, and I was flicking the blade open on mine all the time. So hopefully that one will do a little better. :)

It looks real good!

I would probaly have bought it, too...and if it was just for the looks: who cares? This is a 6 $ knife!

I´d be interested in the performance of it tho.

Does it withstand the spinewhack test?
Can you sharpen it to shaving sharpness?
How do you like the clip?
What about blade play?

I know, it´s cheap. But somehow I still wanna know how it performs, maybe it´s a real bang for the buck?

I have bought a few $10-$20 knives I use for odd jobs from stores online and I don't feel the least bit guilty. I know they are not quality pieces but, As mentioned before I can even loss these and not be bummed. I think everyone should have a cheapo or two laying around Never hurts.

I have a few of those $5 el cheapos and carry them when fishing around piers so that in case I drop the knife no great loss. I don't mind spending for an expensive knife and I have several but I just can't stand to lose even something as inexpensive as a Victorinox. My son has lost enough of them over the years and it kills me to know that they are somewhere out there in a ditch where he left or dropped them.

I am not a hard user and wouldn't put the $5 knife to any real strain so as not to incur an injury to myself, but for things like cutting bait and fishing line, they work fine. I always have some sort of sharpener around to touch up the edge after use anyway.

There are a lot of decent fixed blade knives for $10 or less.
El Cid mentioned the Mora (some of the models sell for as little as $7), I like the Swedish Army model with a stainless blade and green plastic handle (about $8).
There is an assortment of small Victorinox kitchen knives that sell for under $10, my favorites are the 8 cm (3.25") paring knives (about $3).
How about a decent light weight machete for under $2? I reviewed one here:

Decent, name brand folders are harder to find, but not impossible if you watch for sales and close outs.

I'll bite.

I got a little over two bucks in change from a ten for a copy of an S&W Framelock Tanto. It is dual ground and reasonably sharp.

But it's a BIG sucker that I don't carry around. And besides I have an Outdoor Edge Magna that would go in place of the cheap China knife anyway.

I think around $20 (VAPOR!) is as cheap as you are gonna get something decent for.

I would never put much faith in a cheap linerlock or framelock. Lockbacks are easier to do cheap.

You could have gotten a CRKT Mirage for $10 at SMKW.

For box cutting chores, THE best is the good old Stanley 99 utility knife. Takes several different kinds of blades, and you can carry 6 brand new ones in the handle. And, if it closes while you're working, it won't cut you.

BTW, I'm as cheap as they come. My EDC right now at the office is a Meyerco Speed Demon that I picked up at SMKW for $6.99. It's perfect size and weight for office carry, and a lockback with a slot/hole opener.

thats a pretty cool looking knife for 6 bucks but i think upon closer inspection it'll look pretty crappy

(Laughing) Jesus guys ... I love how a simple lookie lookie, turns into a knife snob cornhole fest. I am telling you, I have had pretty much every knife under the sun ... this knife ain't shabby for $6. Very Kershaw Vapor "Like". However, I will put it to the test over the next week or so. If it fails, I will eat crow and let you know. :D

I own a large and small vapor ... you are correct that these are by far the best bang for the buck. I would still lose sleep if I lost one though ... call me cheap in these hard times.

*Here's its terrible lock up... :p

Not a bad knife for the price, provided you're only using it for opening boxes and such. Cheap knives do have their uses, after all. I myself picked up a Ka-Bar style bowie knife from Smoky Mountain Knife Works for $9.99 last Christmas and keep it in my truck tool kit for cutting rope and opening cartons. It's my "so what" knife ~ if I lose it or it breaks, so the hell what. I certainly wouldn't dream of leaving my Trailmaster Bowie in the truck 24/7! :D

On the flip side, here is a quality no frills slipjoint "Twine Knife" from Victorinox that is not too shabby for it's $10-$12 Price Range.

Ryan, where did you find that twine knife? (is there a website where I could find one?)

Thanks!

Jeff

Ryan: I'm not really trying to bash you, but my friend who works in a knife store had a guy who came back with another Fury that couldn't really cut anything and just wouldn't hold an edge. I've also handle some of the Furies and they don't make me comfortable.
