Was shocked to see a sog jungle primative being used,i guess just from knowing everyone here hates them,it seemed to work ok,also looks like some cold steel kukri's,cant tell what fixed blade is being used.it makes me wonder if they are using these cheaper knives & seem to be working,is a Busse,Esse,Fermann, or Fallkniven overkill or do we just have better taste in our equipment?

Looks like i seen a cold steel or two also in a couple of episodes. I'm not sure why they don't use any higher end knives. I guess what there using works for them.
But then again its just TV ya know.

The fixed blade in the first episode was a Cold Steel SRK, which is a pretty good knife. Cold Steel make some functional blades. Sure there are more exclusive brands out there, but CS also gets the job done.

Yes, most of the highly hyped knives are overkill. In third world countries all over the world, there are people doing just fine with a cheap machete, panga, bolo, parang, or some crude knife made from a 1954 Ford truck leaf spring.

Knife knuts tend to get a bit carried away with things.

Carl speaks the truth. As usual.

I buy into the tv survival show hype. I've bought 2 Gerbers, for example, from having watched Man v. Wild. Lets keep that to ourselves, ok? And I keep track of who uses what, from Les Stroud to Adam Savage on Mythbusters (Leatherman Wave).

And I would love to have a crude knife made from a '54 Ford leaf spring.

I have a Gator I bought at a swap meet 15 yrs ago. It's a pretty good knife with great grip. Doesn't hold an edge as well as my best carbon steel knives, but better than my newer stainless knives.
I have 2 Waves, an original 1999 that I got for my birthday, when they cost $120.00 and a new one I bought last year for $30.00.
The original is MUCH better. The new one has already had the small screwdriver and one of the pliers jaws break. I wasn't even abusing it, either.

I have 3 knives made from leaf springs. They are HI. A Kerambit, an Tamang, and a Bonecutter. They are amazing knives.

I concur on this. I have a hand forged machete made by an elderly villager in northern Thailand that I paid two bucks for ten years ago. Handle is bamboo and is held to the tang with tree sap. Great knife. Those guys can take a whole calf from the pen to the plate with just one of these knives.

Yeah, I'd love to have one too  That reminds me that I really liked how they showed in Rambo IV how he made his newest knife from back spring and how it actually looked like utilitarian knife... One heck of an knife

Carl usually nails it.

I have it on good authority though, that those in the know actually prefer '56 Dodge leaf springs. They've become super expensive, of course, and most of them are being hoarded and locked in safes. '54 Ford springs? How pedestrian.:D

I agree with you guys; we knife nuts place way too much emphasis on brand names. It's really — to me — nothing more than snobbery fueled by ego. For 99% of the things we really do, the high end, highly hyped knives don't do any better than a good KA-BAR, CS, or a sharpened, treated, leaf spring.

On the show we're supposed to be seeing two average people stuck in a survival situation. Aside from we few knife devotees, what is the average person more likely to be carrying: a Busse, or Cold Steel? Yep, you nailed it in one: Cold steel — or whatever brand is on sale at Wally World — is the answer. In their situation, I'd be really, really happy with a Becker. YMMV.

Gonna go a bit off-topic, but I mentioned this in the Spyderco forums, too. The other night (Monday?) I was watching Wild Recon on Animal Planet, and on an episode where they're tagging sharks for conservation, the host pulls out and uses a yellow-handled, serrated Spyderco Salt 1 near the end of the show. You get a pretty clear view of it, too.

I think another knife I saw the guy in Man Vs. Wild using once was a large, semi-serrated Wenger SAK locking model.

I'm always trying to spot knives on these types of shows, I'm weird like that.:D
Jim

Wait, are you saying I'm weird?

:D:D
Hey, we're all considered weird by the non-knife world. :) If I'm watching a show (or a movie) where I recognize a certain knife, people who know me will roll their eyes if I say, "Hey, that's a ___________!" (insert brand/knife name here).

I used to watch COPS and Man Vs. Wild only to see what knives I could spot. I thought Survivorman was great all-around, but I also checked out his multi-tools/knives.

I guess it's similar to bird-watching...

Long bed or short bed???

Details are important!

:D

Carl.

Why, long bed, of course. Everyone knows that. But only the models with chrome hub caps and genuine Naugahyde upholstery will do: everything else is clearly inferior. Bonus points for fuzzy dice (models with the optional after-market fuzzy dice make superior knives).:D

I knew it was a jungle primative!! But yeah, anything from the major brands will do you right. Look at Dual Survival, Cody uses an inexpensive Mora and Dave has an expensive knife with a kydex sheath etc.

I was typing this. It's a perfect example. When they built the raft both were using the Mora.

In dual survival, what knife is dave using? looks kind of like a recon scout or esee rc-5.i love watching these survival shows,i find them very interesting to watch.
