Knives with serial numbers

Collectors are known to favour limited edition knives with serial numbers. But seriously though, is it really that important?

Some may argue that the number adds to the value of the knife.

Limited edition knives are not uncommon but would you pay that extra to have one?

IMO, the serial # (for production) knives adds no value.

In fact I think it lowers the value, as since the numbered ones come out first and then later they improve several aspects of the knife.

Only to collectors. I have recently purchased two serial numbered limited runs.

One is the Extrema Ratio Col Moschin double edge #100 of 150 into the US

The other a Strider MARSOC limited to 150, won't know the number till it gets here in about three weeks.

I have had pretty good luck selling limiteds that were serial numbered but the market for them is not as big as the general buying public.

They are still good investments, particularly when they haven't been seen around in a decade and you produce one NIB. Name your price to the right people.

I used to sell knives at shows. To some folks the serial number has no value. To serious collectors (of course depending upon the knife) an early serial number can add up to 20% to the actual value of a knife. There is also a lot of junk out there that has serial numbers as well as knives that were numbered after production. It depends upon the knife.

If you are going to use the knife a serial number would be of no value and I would not pay extra for it. If it is a knife with a sound heritage, early serial numbers have proven in my experience to be excellent values. The vast majority of the stuff I sold turned out to be some of the better "investments" I have made in my life, but always keep in mind that it depends upon the knife.
