Knives without bolsters?

Are there any traditional knife patterns out there without bolsters, other than Sodbusters and Opinels? I'm not even sure how to search for that. Sometimes I just like the look of 'one piece' scales.

A lot of bolstered patterns have versions without the bolsters called "shadow patterns", where the cover material goes the entire length of the knife. For example, searching for "shadow pattern stockman" brings up, among others things, this very neat Case 6344 that belongs/belonged to member KnifeHead:

"Shadow bone" is one of the terms for it. Case came out with a few in 2001 or so. My local Case dealer actually still has a few of them in stock.

Many traditional patterns were sold with two bolsters, one bolster, or no bolsters.

Look for senator (equal-end pen knives), pen, and bartender (corkscrew) patterns.

Boy that white pen on the left in the silver dollar pic. sure is a great looking knife. The scales look like a waterfall scale. Great pictures all of them.

I like the Case knife in that picture... those jigged bone scales without bolsters.... just very elegant!

I love shadow patterns, and wish they made more of them. And I have to agree with Jimmy in that's a very elegant knife!

I believe that knife is a Giesen and Forstoff. The handle material is "French Ivory", a synthetic material with faint bands.

Great pictures all of them.

Some of those pics are just flatbed scans. :o

Here are three, A Griffon pen. An early Rodgers quill knife c 1820/30 and a tiny leg quill/ novelty by Bingham and Ogden.

Best regards

I have not seen one like it before. My sweetheart went antiquing and found it for me. She sure has an eye!

Thank you for the compliment, Dan. I will pass it on.

Robin, you sure have some nice ones, my friend!!

That's a sweet little Case pen my friend, your sweety has a great eye.
I've had the best month ever for amassing new toys ;-))) About 16 knives have come my way, I'm hoping it's a trend ;-))

Very best regards my friend

She does have some beautiful eyes;)

Sounds wonderful!! I can't wait to see some of the new ones and I hope the trend continues for you:D

P.S. - That Rodgers is something else!

The Rodgers IS a wonderful knife. According to Mick Wellington it's incredibly rare, the only one he's ever seen. The "nail nick" in the ivory handle goes through the liner and is a guillotine to cut the tip of to quill pen off square. A latenight e bay find for 12 bucks )))) Insomnia is a good thing at times . It's either Geo the 4th or William the 4th.

Very best regards

Robin

Here's a "shadow pattern" that Jerry Halfrich made. He calls it his Small Rounder.

You'll find that most of the slip joint makers can build bolsterless knives when requested.

Some interesting Shadows on view here, that CASE is really something.

I also like knives with small tip bolsters, they don't seem to appear now, the only one I have is a 20s Remington Senator.

Regards to all, Will

Bark River Fox River series, with & w/o bolsters. I really favor the bolstered ones. It really makes the desert ironwood burl pop. :)

Black G-10 and DIB.
