Knives You Get As Gifts

I give them to my 7yr old son to put in his collection box that we made.

Usually they get put in a drawer or the top of the closet. Depending on the person who gave them they / it will wind up on the coofee table or in a pocket when they visit. If some dork gave it to me it usually gets lost before they leave :D

They go down in my box of keepsake stuff. They may not be good knives(most of them are junk) but someone did think about me and my love for knives when they bought it for me. To me, that's the most important thing.

This.

It's not about the knife's quality or value, it's about the fact that someone thought well enough of me that they tried to get me a gift I'd enjoy. Just because I'm more knowledgable about my hobby than they are doesn't take away from the thoughtfullness of the gift.

I also go with part of thebladerunr's answer and try to remember to wear/use them in front of the giver, especially if its someone I don't see often.

Haven't gotten any knives as gifts yet, but this is probably what I'd do.

What matters is the intent. Plus you never know, sometimes a cheap knife can impress.

I usually keep them in a handy place to do odd dirty jobs that my "good" folders don't want to. I have one in my glove box, and it's made it into my pockets, when I :gasp: make it out to my car without a knife in my pockets.

Luckily, I haven't received any sub-par gift-knives in a long time, as anyone who knows me, now knows that I'm a snob, and that they have no chance of figuring out what I like. ;):D

I only receive knife gifts from one person, my wife's step-father, and he knows a thing or two about knives. I actually always look forward to seeing what I will be getting for Christmas from him. It's one of the few real pleasant surprises I get to anticipate these days.

I completely agree. It really impresses me when I get a knife as a gift regardless of the quality. It shows that the giver actually put some thought into the gift and to what I might like. You should have seen the smiles on my kids' faces the last time that they gave me a $5 knife. It is worth much more than $5 to me.

My little brother got me an el cheapo Winchester fixed blade, that went in the tackle box. A buddy of mine got me the "best knife he ever saw". It is a Cherokee Cutlery Trail of Tears trapper, and, while not an example of premium cutlery, it is a nice knife. My buddy and I both have a lil' bit of Cherokee heritage, and it is a treasured gift from a friend.

I also have my grandfathers old Colonial Cocacola knife. He was a Coca Cola salesman later in life, and must've gotten it as part of an employee deal etc. My little brother has his other one. Both are cherished by us, and both were well used by my grandfather.

When I give knives away, I tend to give away high quality stuff. My sisters and brother love their "hand me down" knives. My parents, uncles, cousins, friends and even a few co workers have gotten some good blades from me.

Same thing here...recently i got a cheap SAK knockoff from my girlfriend that i would never had bought with my own money. But she thought about me, and thought it would make me happy. And her gesture DID make me happy. The little knife is still cheap as hell and i wont carry it, but everytime i look at it im reminded of my girlfriend.

I placed it in my geardrawer where i can see it everytime i open the drawer.

My father-in-law knows more about knives than I could ever hope to. He has always gets me knives or knife books for Christmas/birthdays or out of the blue. He is the one I look to for information and interesting stories!
