Knives You've LOVED, But Then HATED...

I used to love CRKT locking folders, but now I really am getting to the point of not having much use for them. The M21-04 is still a fair knife, but I've stopped carrying most of my CRKTs and have just gravitated to others. The only way I'd carry one of their chisel ground, serrated knives was if I couldn't find any other to carry. Seems like some of the knives I originally thought were great now have difficulty getting sharp. (I tried whittling a little wood with one recently and the knife just wouldn't bite like my others.)

In short, my CRKTs are like a warm bath; once you get used to them, they ain't so hot.

How about you? Do you have any knives where the romance is dead?

I used to love my SOG flash II CE. Then I got some other knives and I haven't looked back. It's wrapped up in a rag with some other folders I don't use right now.

I had a couple of Colt Folders. One had a tanto and the other spear point. They never failed me, but they just didn't sharpen up well. They worked great while I had them. I gave one to a friend and put the other in my tool box. I've bought alot of CRKT for friends who were looking for a inexpensive and tough folder. I think for the non-dicriminating user they are great, for those who have tasted better steels they can fall short.

I used to love my Buck Alpha dorado. I thought it was the coolest knife ever. Now that I'm used to it, it's getting a little old. I still like it, but not like I used to.

Interesting question. For me, I'd put the Italian folding stilettos into that category. Growing up in the 60's & 70's, I thought they were the ultimate. I had a couple manual opening versions, and for a while had a cheapy switchblade that I bought from some guy--totally illegal, of course.

The more I learned about knives, the less impressed I was. Prone to breakage in various ways, and not great for utility purposes that constitute 99.999% of a knife's raison d'etre. In fact I don't even like autos and assisted folders now--give me a manual opener with thumb studs & super-smooth opening w/ pivot bearing. To me that is the ne plus ultra right now.

I could easily get that dream Italian folder now if I wanted, but....pass.

CRKT M16. It's not a bad little knife, and when I got it last year, I thought it was so cool that I had a big bad black tactical knife. Then it broke- I sent it back to CRKT, and they replaced it, but by that time I had gotten more knives and I don't use it that much anymore.

The same goes for my M60 SOFTB. I got it because I wanted a fixed blade, it was half off and looked cool. Then i realized that it was heavy, the grip didn't fit me that well, the handle wasn't all that comfortable, and I didn't like partial serrations.

Byrd Meadowlark. I ordered it because it was cheap and I had heard good things about it. When it go here, I carried it for a week. I slowly came to realize that it was heavy, didn't ride comfortably in the pocket, and that I really didn't like the thumb hole. Now it stays in the garage.

MOD 675, plunge lock, clip point "fighter blade". Had the very worst edge (for an fairly expensive knife) I've ever seen. Came dull and wouldn't sharpen at all for the last third of the blade. I got rid of it and will never buy another MOD.

Benchmade 520

Looked cool, felt good in the hand and the axis lock was so extremely smooth...
I loved it. Until I clipped it to my jeans pocket.

REKAT sifu.

i loved them, at the time i loved big folders & the sifu was about the only game in town, but after edc'ing one for a while and finding out first hand what a sorry excuse for a lock the rolling lock was i sold my 3 sifus and got a cammilus maxx, which is imho 10X the knife the sifu was, if for no other reason than they locked up correctly, which is a lot more than i can say for the sifu.

if ya dont think i loved them at one time look at my username lol.

The Kershaw Lahar. Good in all aspects but I hate the fact that it looks too nice to be a beater knife even at the price point...also the Spydie Tenacious.

Thats why my heart is wanting an Emerson CQC-7 more and more. First thing I'd do when I get one I'll roll it down the driveway...those knives really look cool scratched up a bit.
