I posted this thread in the "main" Blade Forum, because it's about more than Spyderco, though Spyderco is one of the more conspicuous victims of the knock-off outfits.

'Knockoffs' Don't Violate Trademarks, Justices Rule

It's a fashion industry case where the dollars at stake were a lot bigger than the whole sport-utility knife business.

[insert string of curses and profanity here.]

Very Important post. 10x for the info.

Speaking as a lawyer I can't really comment without reading the entire verdict - All I can say is that as always - court cases are a zero sum game - one side wins - the other side looses. The problem is when you are on the wrong side - and you didn't have anything to do with it.

All of us can go on supporting Spyderco and the rest of the quality manufactures and try to explain to all our friends and relatives why they should do the same.

Who knows - maybe we'll get another addict in the process...

I'm not an attorney but I work with Intellectual Property, so it was very interesting reading.

I guess that says a LOT about me ... I'm just not sure if it says good things

In the fashion industry there are people that copy the dresses right off the designers runway. In many cases they can get like quality. That is not the case from what I have seen with the Spyderco knockoffs from China. They look about the same but the level of materials and quality just isn't there. I suppose that the answer lies in educating the public since the courts only provide limited recourse. If a person tries a Spyderco they can't go back.
