Hey y'all! I believe this here is a Knot Klipper Warranted double bit. I've already removed the old handle and dipped it in rust remover and hit it with the wire wheel.

I just had a few questions about this particular head. It's got a little bit of pitting bad on one side. Is it too far gone to repair?

How would you go from here? Notice the edge is pretty rough. Should a file be able to cut this metal?

Thanks,

Sure a good file will cut it! And the axe is definitely worth saving as a user. You'll need to remove enough so that by the time you file your cutting edge there aren't any dings or chips right at the edge. Or you'll have a perforated edge... no good! It'll probably look something like this;

Except for yours is worn more at the toe. But you'll need to re-profile anyway.
The oxidation layer is going to be hard to get through but once through you should be able to cut that steel no problem. Post up progress!

The pitting isn't an issue. You can file it away at the cutting edge.

A bigger concern is how worn the toes (upper points) are. There may be little to no hardened steel left there. If so it wouldn't be a very durable user.

I'm not usually a fan of vinegar soaks because they remove all the patina. But a vinegar soak will show you just how much hardened steel is left and also whether your axe was made with an inlaid or overlaid bit. Knowing these things can help you decide if you want to spend time restoring this axe.
