Having a good knowledge of tying knots is something that I think every man should have. To my embarrassment, I have never learned the art of knot tying.

Every time the situation arises (once or twice a year), I feel like an idiot and just do three or four square knots.

Can anyone recommend the best and most comprehensive "bible" of knot tying?

Keep in mind I'm working on a 30+ year foggy memory here... I seem to remember having some kind of book in boy scouts that illustrated how to do a pretty good variety of knots. I'm sure someone here will chime in with a better source, whether book or web site.

I'm currently working through a book called "The Handbook of knots" by Des Pawson. nice clear illustrations and covers everything from very basic knots to
complicated whippings and splices etc.

Your local library will have a dozen or more knot tying books. I'd checked out some of them, looked at the pics, and thought "That's easy!" But... When it came time to actually tie the knot later, I was lost. So, one time I checked out a book and went through it with a 6 foot piece of rope and tied each one as I looked at the pics (and until I could tie it without looking at the pics)

I still have to fumble a bit now, but I know the basics and a couple advanced pretty well now.

The bible is Ashley's Book of Knots but there's also a tremendous amount of information available on the net. Start at www.realknots.com

Thanks! That's what I was looking for!

I just read a dozen reviews on "Ashley's book of knots", and every one said that it's the best knot tying manual published......even with it being 60+ years old.

This is the reason that I love Internet forums, the wealth of common knowledge is astounding!

I tie decorative knots as a hobby, I have Ashley's book, Pawson's book and a bunch of others, I also know the realknots (Ropers Knots Page) site well, all are good recommendations, I would suggest start with the realknots site since it is free and has good and plenty of info, Pawson's book is excellent for beginners, Ashley´s book I would recommend after more experience.

You can see some pictures of my knots and other stuff at this page, from collectors-of-schrades-r.us, a site set up by a good friend from the Schrade Collectors forum.

Get a book, its much more fun than looking at a monitor. Go to a climbing shop and get a couple of meters of 10mm 5-6mm and cordette (2-3mm) and some webbing if they have it.

Knot tying is addictive, the problem you will have now when confronted with a tying job is exactly which one to use!

Matteo,

I work in DC as a fireman and am on a unit that performs rope rescue and actually teach it for our department. I am often called a "rope geek" which is viewed simultaniously as a compliment and a slam (a fire dept. culture type of thing). Anyhow, if you are interested in learning knots from a person, give me a shout and I'd be happy to show you.

I learned most of the knots I know from the Boy Scout Handbook. Knowing how to tie the knots is only half the story. When learning knots, make sure to pay attention to the purpose and primary use of a knot. Too many people just use a square knot (or a bastardized version) for every knot tying purpose.

Besides being able to hold under proper circumstances, a properly tied knot should be easy to untie.
