hey there knuts.

I'm looking for a book that has a ton of knots, both useful and decorative.

I only really know how to tie a roast and my shoelaces, so I need some info.

My local library has one but I also want to do lanyards and all I got was the monkey fist.

I have located Geoffrey Budsworth encyclopedia of knots online.

Is this any good?

multiple items are ok.

thanks for any suggestions.

Budsworth has a book of decorative knots that is pretty good. I recommend getting the Ashley book of knots and a couple of other books that focus on the type of knotwork you want to do.

Waldganger,

I've got Gibson's Handbook of Knots and Splices in .PDF format. What's your e-mail? I'll send it to you.

As a definitive reference, Ashley is the best. Pricey, but if you have a big interest in knots as a tool, you'll end up buying it, sooner or later. However, books are like knives - the more the better. :)

I don't know about you guys, but when I've looked at Ashley's book, it has seemed more like an encyclopedia of knots, and less like a how-to guide. My favorite of my 10-or-so knot books is Des Pawson's Handbook of Knots It has the clearest illustrations of any of them, and comes in a convenient size.

Book?

That is so 20th century.

More seriously, there are a lot of websites you could check.

I've spent many an enjoyable evening with Ashley, sitting in my easy chair.
There are many books and many websites to be used,
but Ashley is right there with Nessmuk and Kephart.
Close to hand and like old and familiar friends who you never grow tired of and enjoy the company of. :)

Im not good with knots so i wanted to learn the basics what i could use in the outdoors. I bought the Gordon Perry Knots Very easy to understand and use.

If you want to carry it with you out into the wild...REI has a deck of playing cards that has different knots on each card...as far as I'm concerned..nothing wrong with having a deck of cards with you. And they serve a pratical purpose as well. Just something to look into. Gene

Very true. The interest of the Ashley's book is to make you think about knots. What are the knots for such or such use? What are the most reliable for my particular uses? What are those i can remember and make even in the dark and so on. Don't trust the kind of reader's digest books of knots, they are right for the author, may be not for you.

Waldganger, don't carry a book in your bag, make your own selection, draw your useful knots on a notebook, you will learn a lot that way.

dantzk.
