I like throwing knives, they're quiet.

Can someone tell me what a Kubaton is?

A kubaton is a self defense tool that is basically any hard object that can be used to hit hard parts of the body such as bone to inflict damage or as to hold in the hand and add mass to a punch.

Check out the Advanced Balisong Manual by Jeff Imada. He has a section in there on balisongs used as a kubaton.

Cool, that's what I thought it was. Anyway, what would anyone here reccommend for a balisong artist that is in section 2 of the intermediate level of Clay's site, the Balisong Manual? or The Advanced Balisong Manual? And can everything in those books by learned on Clay's site?

Hi All,

Anyone know of some web-sites that show how to use the Kubotan, similar to what Clay has done with BaliSongXtreme?

Thanks,
Fritz

That would be pretty neat !!
I carry a kubotan myself, but in a "situation" I would just put it inside my hand to get some extra weight behind my blows. Because I don't know how to use it any other way. I think a training partner would be necessary though.

BTW, there should be a site like Clay's for every martial art out there ! 8-)
It's not just a good idea, it's the LAW!! (I wish)

A "loaded" fist is a really good way to break your hand. I've been told this by bouncer, military, martial artist & EMT friends. But you don't have to take their word for it ...

Maybe it would fare well with many of the Hap ki Do techniques extending to the pressure points.

A Kubaton is not used to hit people with. I have sold a keychain kubaton with a knife in it for years. A Mag Flashlight makes a very good Kubatan, and if you push the button and light comes out, I am told it's legal to take on an airplane. Martial Arts trainers tell me it takes about a month to learn how to use one.

Anyone who has ever had an older brother knows that if he grabed a hold of you and dug his fingers into you, then you would within reason, do whatever he wanted you to do. Esp, if he was holding onto the back of your neck. The Kubaton works the same way. You hold the Kubaton in your hand and force it into the bone of the person your trying to control. If you have a little keychain size Kubaton in your hand and you grab a hold of their arm, and force the Kubaton into their bone, it can cause enough pain that in some cases it will give you an advantage. Of course it is not going to work with someone who has been trained to ignore pain. But the average person tends to avoid pain if they can avoid it. So when dealing with a untrained person, it can have some usefullness as a defensive weapon.

I have been told that one reason police like to get handcuffs on people, is that if they act up they can twist the handcuffs and cause enough pain that the person will calm themselves down, to avoid the pain. I don't know if that is true or not, but that is the basic theory behind the Kubatan. I sell them because even though it's a weapon, it can not really do enough harm or damage to cause a person to have to get medical treatment. Thanks, JohnR7 www.BalisongKnife.com

>>A "loaded" fist is a really good way to break your hand.

That it true, my father was a doctor for 50 years and he treated a lot more people for broken hands, rather than a broken face. The bones in the nose can be broken, but other than than, there is not much chance of being able to break a bone in the face with your fist. That is why people who really know how to fight hit with the side of the hand, where they have strengthened the bone by breaking boards. I use to change tires and I would beat the hub cap on with the side of my hand, and in time the bone seemed to get harder.

The reason boxers wear boxing gloves is to protect the hand. Because the bones in the fist are so very easy to break. Thanks, JohnR7

I'm not sure who told you a kubotan/yawara/pocket stick is not used to hit with. In the FMA it is used almost entirely for hits, with raking, joint locking and presure points thrown in.

I would suggest Guro Ted Lucaylucay's Pocket Stick tape from Unique publications. All of the techniques shown can be adapted to a closed balisong. The Panther Productions Balisong tapes have some combative applications, showing the Balisong used closed and in transition.

I agree with striking. Here are the basic Yawara strikes.

While facing them. (right side means your right side.)
1. Right side of the Brachial Plexus Origin
2. Left side of the Brachial Plexus Origin
3. Right side of the ribs
4. Left side of the ribs.
5. Solar Plexus
6. Throat.

For one through four pretend you are holding a hammer in your hand. For five and six pretend that you are stabbing with a sword.

!!!Warning!!!
These strikes are for severe self defense only.

I have a doubt :
is the word "Kubaton" is used on purpose, instead of "Kubotan" ?
Indeed Kubotan is a registred trademark... Kubaton would be/is a good way to generalize the concept.
