Know this Wilson guy? Rough Rider Sunfish Modification

Let's try this in Traditional

I think remember seeing his scrimshaw on knives and guns in 'GUN DIGEST' when I was a young lad, in the 1960's and 1970's.
If memory serves he was one of the best, even then. I think his first name was "Ron", but I am probably wrong on that. 🤨
I don't know if he is still active ... or if he is still counted among the "living" ... for that matter.

That is a beautiful example of his work and skill. Definitely a rare Rough Rider Sunfish.

Fantastic score. Congrats! 😁👍

You ever find the scoundrel that murdered that beautiful knife I would like to have a word with him,the audacity to turn a 25 dollar knife into something you would be hard pressed to give away.now that my anger has been suppressed I'm curious to how you came across it.

It is kinda hilarious that the guy chose a Rough Rider to invest all that time into. It's like gold plating a plastic army man from Dollar Tree....

Time was readily available but maybe not the money to buy the canvas…the knife. I have a scrimshawed tiny toothpick made by a Parker firm and a Native American decorated Chinese made lockback. In both cases the knife cost <$15 before it was embellished.

I was thinking the same thing, but he might of been a starving artist,or was out on the trap line with only that knife to mess with.

My guess is that the fella wanted to practice on a cheapo instead of something better. It's far and away better than anything I could ever do. I think it looks cool, especially the worm on the hook!

Funny enough, there used to be a place on Maui called Lahaina Scrimshaw that would make beautiful scrimshaw art on little slivers of whale bone, ivory, etc. Unfortunately, they are now out of business. Most of their work ended up being epoxied onto cheap knives (think S&W tactical folders, cheap stilettos, Rough Riders...) in place of the factory handle inserts. Some of their larger work was epoxied onto Kershaws, Spydercos, Case, Buck, and such. Anyway, they would afix world class scrimshaw art onto ~$25.00 knives all of the time and sell it for $50.00+. I got one such knife when I was a kid and didn't realize the irony until I was much older. Maybe this Wilson fellow is a kindred spirit.
